| | Hugh Lane Gallery TY Programme 2026 and Display Our annual TY course for teens is a curated education programme that enables transition year students gain an insight into the operations of the gallery. Following an Open Call, our offsite Transition Year programme took place over five weeks in our art room at the Seán O’Casey Community Centre and other cultural locations around the city including artist Anca Danila‘s studio as seen in this short film below. We are very grateful to all of the students for their curiosity, their active discussions, enthusiastically completing their assignments and their immense creativity; and to all of our artists, lecturers, staff and guest contributors who participated in this year's course facilitated by Tori Boccarossa and co-curated with Jessica O’Donnell, Head of Education and Community Outreach, Hugh Lane Gallery. Art in the Making: A Transition Year Gallery Experience is a display of artwork curated by the students now on view at the Sean O'Casey Community Centre until 25 April 2026.

Fee: €5 (including tea/coffee) - Wednesdays, 10:30am. Our popular series of illustrated art talks exploring artworks from our collection delivered by our expert lecturers are taking place in person on Wednesdays at 10.30am in Dominick St Community Centre, D1. This April subjects include Weaver Square by Lizzie Stephens with Dr Anne Cormican; stories from archives with Logan Sisley; and Venice by Nathanial Hone with Barbara O'Connell. Tickets may be purchased in advance via the Eventbrite links on our website here or in cash on the day subject to availability.
HLG Offsite Lectures - DCC Public Libraries throughout the City. Our Dublin and Art offsite lectures series in public libraries throughout the city and delivered by our expert lecturers are continuing on Thursdays in April. These very well received talks explore how artists have been inspired by the people and places of Dublin city from the 19th century to the present day. There are also specific talks on Dublin's stained glass and highlights of significant and influential artistic events that have occurred during the period. In April these talks are taking place in public libraries in Cabra, Coolock, Ballymun and Central Library. HLG Offsite Basic Talks - NCAD (Harry Clarke Lecture Theatre) Friday 17 April, 1pm. Free Join us for a Basic Talk with artist Chloe McDonagh, who will be in conversation with Basic Space Director Laura Harvey Graham. Basic Talks is a series of talks with leading contemporary practitioners. Curated by Basic Space in partnership with Hugh Lane Gallery, BASIC TALKS is a platform for lectures, workshops, presentations, and performances. Come along to the Sean O'Casey Community Centre for a screening of a selection of films by the journalist, war reporter, documentary filmmaker, fiction filmmaker, photographer, visual artist and cultural activist Jocelyne Saab. This film programme is curated and presented by artist Helena Gouveia Monteiro who will introduce the films along with post-screening Q+A. Free, book via Eventbrite or come on the day subject to availability For more information please see here. | | | | | | | Drawing Course for Adults Dates: Saturdays 11, 18 and 25 April 2026, 11am-1pm Led by artist Ashleigh Downey, this three-week course invites adults of all levels to explore ways of seeing, making marks, and responding to the world around them – experimenting with line, texture, tone, scale, and the spaces in between. A variety of exercises and approaches encourage curiosity, observation, and imaginative expression. Participants are guided to follow their intuition, engage with the moment, and develop their own visual language. Whether new to drawing or with previous experience, this course offers a supportive space to reflect, create, and enjoy the process of mindful mark-making. Introduction to Stained Glass Making for Adults Friday 22 May 2026, 10am-4pm Inspired by the work of Harry Clarke and stained glass artists in our collection, gain insights into stained glass techniques during this one-day practical course for adults led by artist Madeleine Hellier. This course in stained glass panel making using the copper foil (Tiffany) method is suitable for beginners or those with a little experience of glass and will introduce participants to skills in glass cutting, grinding, soldering and patinating. Calling all 13-17 year olds. We invite you to experiment with Hugh Lane Gallery! Reverse stained-glass painting Thursday 2 April 2026, 10am-1pm Explore the ancient technique of reverse painting in this stained-glass inspired workshop with Roxana Manouchehri. | | | | | |  | In preparation for the closure of the Hugh Lane’s Charlemont House gallery, all the works in the building were condition checked to ensure they were fit for transit and to carry out and treatments necessary. Take a rare look at one of Harry Clarke’s preparatory cartoons being unrolled and checked here.
In some cases, it was necessary to remove some of the old mounting materials which had deteriorated and to replace them with newer, more stable materials. Watch a video of conservator Heidi Forsyth removing some aged tape from the backing of a work on paper here.
Some works in the gallery’s collection require regular attention while on display in order to keep them in good condition. Our conservators periodically rotated the central section of Maud Cotter’s Matter of Face in order to distribute the weight of the work evenly.
