We at aemi are thrilled to announce three free events as part of DISSOLUTIONS '25. Through the generous support of Screen Ireland, we have been able to develop these specially developed events, which focus on discussing modes of attention, skill sharing and career development and lastly a masterclass exploring humour as a political tool in artist filmmaking.
FRIDAY 26th September @ 16:00 The Complex, Dublin
Firstly and head of a weekend of screenings for DISSOLUTIONS, aemi is pleased to present ‘Take Your Seats…’, a panel discussion devised with Paper Visual Art and featuring writers from their recently published collection, In The Good Seats exploring the allure of film as an art form and the idiosyncrasies of the cinema space.
Taking this 2024 New Yorker article about modes of attention and a mysterious collective called ‘The Order of the Third Bird’, the panel, including NCAD lecturer Francis Halsall and film artist Jenny Brady, will discuss what it means to engage with artist and experimental film as part of a festival and what distinguishes the audience experience from solitary viewing.

SATURDAY 27th September @ 14:00 The Complex, Dublin
Jeremy Rigsby, Assistant Director Media City Film Festival will give a talk that will look at the changing environments now facing film artists on the festival circuit.
Media City Film Festival (rooted in both Ontario, Canada and Detroit, Michigan) is widely recognised as an industry leader in its advancement and support of artists whose practices are experimental in form, genre, content, and aesthetics. While their activities centre on an annual festival the organisation’s activities are year-round and wide reaching including their CHRYSALIS FELLOWSHIP which recently supported the work of Kamal Aljafari, Director of DISSOLUTIONS 25’s opening film. As well as being Assistant Director of the festival Jeremy Rigsby has also been central to the development of the Angelis Novis Network, a rotating congregation of artists, curators, conservationists, funders, filmmakers, and other professionals. This network offers experimental development and industry activities to uplift filmmakers and adjacent communities in collaboration with museums, galleries, granting and distribution agencies, festivals, and other affinity groups and institutions internationally. Jeremy will bring his extensive knowledge and experience to this wide-ranging discussion which will look at the changing environments now facing film artists on the international festival circuit.

SUNDAY 28th September @ 12:00pm The Complex, Dublin
aemi is proud to present ‘TOGETHER WE CAN STOP THIS SHIT’, a masterclass from DISSOLUTIONS ’25 artist in focus Basma al-Sharif on humour as a political tool in artist filmmaking. Basma will lead participants in a brief writing exercise after giving an informal talk on the role of satire across her practice.
Working nomadically between the Middle East, Europe, and North America, Basma al-Sharif – an artist and filmmaker of Palestinian heritage – explores cyclical political histories. In films and installations that move backward and forward in history, between place and non-place, she confronts the legacy of colonialism with satire, doubt, and hope.
In a moment of immense despair, this masterclass traces humour through Basma’s work and engages participants in how we can turn to satire in the face of hopelessness, humor as a weapon against silence, and what space art can still offer when the cultural sector seems to be collapsing on the dawn of a live streamed genocide.
