New Artist Commissions Announced for the 41st EVA International

From EVA International.
22 July 2024.

Platform Commissions: Announcing new Artist Commissions for the 41st EVA International, selected by Iarlaith Ní Fheorais and Roy Claire Potter.

EVA International is pleased to announce the selected artists for the Platform Commissions programme of the 41st EVA International—Ireland’s Biennial of Contemporary Art: Éireann and I (Joselle Ntumba and Beulah Ezeugo), Colm Keady-Tabbal, Olivia Normile, Bridget O’Gorman, and Lyónn Wolf.

The selected artists will work with EVA International to develop projects that will be presented as part of the biennial programme, taking place from Autumn 2025 across Limerick city. Proposals were selected by Iarlaith Ní Fheorais and Roy Claire Potter, following an open call process that invited artists to respond to ideas and definitions of access.

Iarlaith Ní Fheorais and Roy Claire Potter remarked on the selection process:

“I was deeply impressed by the breadth of vision in which access was considered and how it could be applied through artistic and participatory means, folding in broad concerns, geographies, and affinities.” (Iarlaith Ní Fheorais)

“I was encouraged and impressed by the readiness of all the applicants who were willing to pursue thought and practice that expands from definitions of access. A great number of artists in Ireland are socially and politically driven toward not only inclusion, but hybrid methodologies for high impact art making.” (Roy Claire Potter)

EVA International Director, Matt Packer, stated:

“The Platform Commissions initiative continues to provide a unique opportunity for artists based in Ireland to develop new and uniquely ambitious works, within the supportive and artist-focussed environment of EVA. We look forward to working with all of the selected artists over the next months, ahead of the 41st EVA International in 2025.”

Artist Biographies:
Éireann and I is a community archive for Black migrants in Ireland. It is also a migrant memory project, where events and discussions on heritage, memory work, and agency within the public record are hosted. As a creative platform, the project aims to connect artists with migrant communities through participatory workshops, resulting in publications and public installations. It is co-developed by curator and researcher Beulah Ezeugo and cultural worker Joselle Ntumba. Recent work includes the publication Dreaming Still, commissioned by The Douglas Hyde (2024); exhibitions at Galway Arts Centre (2022) and The Douglas Hyde (2022); and a curatorial residency at the Museum of Everyone (2023).

Colm Keady-Tabbal (they/them) is an Irish-Lebanese artist currently based in New York. Their practice investigates epistemologies of sound, place and memory and their relationship to systems and architectures of control. Operating through installations, performance, moving image and writing their work addresses the legacies of applied modernism and behaviourism, often appropriating the forms and language of existing media and infrastructure. Their work has been exhibited and performed at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Fridman Gallery, Lenfest Centre for the Arts, IRCAM Festival, Douglas Hyde Gallery, Ormston House, and Cork Centre for Architectural Education. They received their BA in Fine Art from the NCAD, Dublin and an MFA from Columbia University School of the Arts.

Olivia Normile is a visual artist working across installation, drawing, animation and film. Her practice engages with fictional storytelling by considering human to non-human relationships through opportunistic and structured moments. Recent residencies and awards include: Digital Media Practice Award (2024), Firestation Artists’ Studios Dublin, Arts Council Agility Award (2022), (2021), Dublin City Council St. Patrick’s Lodge Residency (2019), Emerging Irish Artist Award, Burren College of Art (2018), Ormond Art Studios Graduate Award (2018). Exhibitions include: Dog-Eared Paradise, screen service (2023), Matters of Table, Periphery Space, Gorey School of Art (2023), Remembering The Future, VISUAL (2023), Deliverables, Pallas Projects/Studios Artist Initiated Projects (2022).

Bridget O’Gorman is an artist and writer based in Tipperary. Bridget works with sculpture, live events, text and video, and is also a portfolio artist with field:arts —working with Iarlaith Ni Fheorais recently they developed a major commission as part of TULCA 2023 supported by Arts & Disability Ireland. Exhibitions include: Speech Sounds, VISUAL (2022), Health Club, Hyde Park Arts Centre (2019), Lucians Neighbours, IMMA (2018). Public projects include: Supernatural Bread, Project Arts Centre (2022), On Slowness, Auto Italia (2021), The Legacy of Gesture, FACT & DADA Fest (2019).

Lyónn Wolf is a trans, working class, visual artist, educator and writer. Rooted in Ireland with a history of community organising, and working internationally, they make long term projects intentionally shaped by economic necessity. They engage forms of recycling, thrift and ephemera, resulting in soft modularity, wild archiving and performative intervention, posing questions about value, accumulation and authorship. They see a cultural centring of thrift as part of a tradition of queer-working class vernacular and ethics, promiscuous and adept at working within limitations. Lyónn has developed a trilogy of works since 2014 dealing with queer economies and spatial politics: The Re-appropriation of Sensuality, Sex in Public & Domestic Optimism. Exhibitions include: The Project Arts Centre Dublin, The Grazer Kunstverein, Steirischer Herbst Festival Graz, NCAD Gallery Dublin, Dundee Contemporary Arts, nGbK Berlin, Survival Kit Riga & De Appel Amsterdam.

New report shows artists are struggling to make a living in NI

From Arts Council of Northern Ireland
16 July 2024

Artists in Northern Ireland are earning on average just £11,200 per year from their work according to a stark new report examining the Living and Working Conditions of Artists in Northern Ireland.

The research, undertaken by Perspective Economics and commissioned by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, is the first study of its kind in over a decade and paints a troubling picture for artists (online survey conducted from the 27th of November 2023 to the 5th of January 2024).

The study, which examined 481 responses from a diverse range of artists across various demographics, career stages, and artistic disciplines, found loss of public investment for the arts, the short-term and long-term impact of COVID-19 and the cost-of-living crisis to be among the challenges which have shaped the acts sector over the last 10 years.

Despite there being an estimated 14,500 artists in Northern Ireland¹, just 29% of those surveyed said they worked full time in the arts and derived 100% of their income from their artistic practice.

Over half (53%) surveyed indicated they have considered or would consider permanently relocating outside of Northern Ireland for better career prospects. This figure rose to 65.2% for those aged between 18 and 34, suggesting potential issues with retaining young artists due to a lack of career opportunities within Northern Ireland.

Karly Greene, Director of Strategic Developments and Partnerships commented:

“This report gives us new insight into the challenges facing artists here. Findings show that although our arts community is highly trained and educated, few work full-time and earning potential is severely limited. The report also noted high levels of anxiety among artists, when compared to the general population.

“The Arts Council recently launched a new Ten Year Strategy and within that we outlined our commitment to grow artistic talent and develop the wider workforce. Artists, the work they produce, the festivals they create, the music the compose, are at the very heart of life in Northern Ireland, enriching communities, driving tourism, boosting our nighttime economy. This is a sector from which we ask an awful lot but to which we give very little. Further investment in the arts would yield significant returns for Northern Ireland, giving them the capacity to grow and the ability to generate more income from other sources.”

Key findings from the report:

  • Using the Annual Population Survey and the Arts Council’s own data, there are approximately 14,500 artists in Northern Ireland.
  • The mean total income reported by those that made some of their income from arts activities was £19,200 in 2023. The mean income directly related to their arts activities is £11,200 (or 54% of their total income).
  • 29% of those surveyed earned 100% of their income from their arts activities. 26% of respondents said between 1% and 19% of their income came from their arts practice.
  • Comparing total income to the 2010 research survey baseline suggests that artists have faced a real-term reduction in overall income by 11% between 2010 and 2023. For the wider economy, mean wages increased by 1% in that same period.
  • 27% of artists with arts-related income have received at least one public grant in the past, and these artists earn approximately £2,600 more per annum from the arts compared to those who have not received a grant
  • Artists who spend more than 40 hours per week on arts-related work have the highest average income from their arts activities (£16,600 or 84% of their total income). This represents around £8 per hour, approximately 30% lower than the National Living Wage (from April 2024).
  • On average, artists in Northern Ireland possess three additional qualifications, certifications, or professional training beyond their primary education. This illustrates the depth of expertise and commitment to continuous learning within the artist community.
  • Artists in Northern Ireland derive a significant portion (around 40%) of their arts-related income from sources outside of Northern Ireland.
  • Most strikingly, the survey suggests that anxiety is more prevalent amongst artists than for the general population. On average, artists reported anxiety levels of 5.1, but for the whole of Northern Ireland this average was only 2.9.

¹ Using the Annual Population Survey and the Arts Council’s own data, it is estimated that there are approximately 14,500 artists in Northern Ireland.

Open Call | Percent for Art Commission from Citywest and Saggart CNS

Introduction and Context:

Citywest and Saggart CNS opened its doors as ‘Scoil Niamh CNS’ in September 2012 under the leadership of Mr. Séamus Conboy and deputy principal Orla Doherty. It is a vertical co-educational school under the patronage of Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Education and Training Board.

The first 16 students were housed in temporary accommodation in Citywest. Over the years, the school has grown and is now at an enrolment of over 435 students.

In 2019, the school saw many changes with the introduction of new principal Michael Byrne and their move into the new permanent building located in Cooldown Commons, Citywest. The new building, equipped with 2 Autism classes, 16 classrooms, a P.E hall and numerous support rooms, is now host to a staff of over 45 people and all classes from infants to 6th.

Ethos / values

The vision of Citywest & Saggart CNS is to create a safe, calm, respectful and inclusive learning environment in which the school community works in close partnership to encourage children to develop the skills, relationships and empathy which will allow them to participate to their full potential in school and in society. We strive for the highest quality teaching and learning in fostering the holistic development of the individual child.

Our vision for education in Citywest & Saggart CNS starts with creating an environment which is safe, calm and a place the community can call home. We endeavour to create an environment which is inclusive and respectful; where the welfare of the child is at the centre of all decisions.

We aim to develop skills which will make the children independent, creative and innovative thinkers. Citywest & Saggart CNS strives to equip all of the children with skills that will ensure they can reach their full potential in all aspects of their development at school and into the future.

Relationships are at the centre of school life and Citywest & Saggart CNS aspires to create and maintain strong and purposeful connections with its students, parents, staff and the wider community. This in turn will ensure that all members of our school community will feel a strong sense of belonging and have a deeper understanding of the perspectives of others. Individual similarities and differences in our school is what will pave way for a thriving learning environment where personal achievements, cultural and religious identity are recognised, valued and celebrated.

In living out such a vision, the staff of our school, in strong partnership with parents and community members, will employ active, innovative and inclusive practices to ensure all children have equal opportunity to succeed. We will expose the children to a wide and varied selection of curricular and extra-curricular activities in order to encourage the holistic development of the child. The school will strive for excellence in all aspects of the child’s education while also prioritising the wellbeing of all stakeholders. The practices and approaches to the development of the students in our care will be guided by our values of Respect, Responsibility, Empathy, Collaboration, Belonging, Care and Creativity.

Demographic

The school is home to parents and students from almost 50 different countries of the world speaking a wide variety of languages (as well as those who communicate in non-speaking ways). We are a mixed school with many family types (Mother/father, same sex, single parents, family carers etc.). As well as the many countries, languages and family types, we have a long list of belief systems in our school from religious and non-religious traditions.

Elements that are particular to our school

We try to harness the stories of the children and parents to enrich learning in the classrooms. The acknowledgment and celebration of the cultural, religious and festive aspects of the children’s lives is very important to us here. The main focus is on sharing who they are as an individual, finding out where their place is in the world whilst also listening to and learning from the worldviews of the children around them. We also like to focus the children on our shared Irish identity – sharing the Irish language, culture and traditions. There is much to be learned from comparing stories from the Irish tradition with traditions from around the world.

Our school also shows an interest in sustainability and the great outdoors. We have a wonderful garden where we sow vegetables, native trees, wildflowers, examine wildlife, have a pond. We like to get the children outdoors and involved with the biodiversity on our grounds. We also take great pride in celebrating the uniqueness of each child in terms of their abilities and strengths, the neurodiversity and cultural diversity.

The school asks that artists who apply consider the following:

  • Citywest and Saggart CNS Public Art Working Group are seeking expressions of interest from artists whose practice focuses on permanent visual artwork(s) for their exterior or interior of their school building in a visual medium.
  • The Public Art Working Group are open to the idea of the artworks travelling throughout the interior of the building, sites can discussed with shortlisted artists at Stage 2.
  • An engagement process with as many of their 435 students as is possible without significantly impacting the budget for permanent artwork(s).
  • An engagement process can be supported by teachers and parents as volunteers so not to impact the budget significantly, although creative input must be led by the artist.
  • It is expected that artwork(s) will be imaginatively interactive for the children in this age group – 5 – 12 years.
  • The Public Art Working Group are not interested in the Digital Art Medium for this commission.
  • The Public Art Working Group is seeking Artwork(s) that will embrace the school in it’s special location, it’s values and focus on their community of children, teachers and parents, biodiversity and local natural environment.
  • The Public Art Working Group also require the artwork / artworks proposed at Stage 2 be low maintenance, adhere to health and safety standards and will stand the test of time in their relevance and materials.
  • We are conscious of cultural sensitivities with regard to certain aspects of celebration (e.g we have children from backgrounds that do not celebrate anything, those who view some celebrations as witchcraft (Halloween) and aspects of culture which could be offensive towards others.
  • Any religious imagery should encapsulate all of the belief systems in the school and must not focus upon one belief system.

Open Call | Hampson House Per Cent for Art Commission from The Health Service Executive

Project Name: Hampson House
Site Location:  North Earl Street, Dublin 1, D01 T6W2
Deadline for Submissions:  12 Noon, 7th August 2024

1. Introduction/ Background

The Health Service Executive (HSE) is undertaking fit out works at Hampson House, North Earl Street, Dublin 1 in 2024 and intends to implement the Per Cent for Art (PCFA) Scheme. This is a government initiative, first introduced in 1978, whereby 1% of the net construction cost of any publicly funded capital, infrastructural or building development can be allocated to the commissioning of a work (or works) of art, to set maximum limits.

While the primary purpose of the scheme is to facilitate the commissioning or acquisition of new art from professional artists, there is an increasing evidence based appreciation for the role arts have in improving the mental & physical, health and wellbeing, of those who use, visit or work in healthcare buildings. Artworks can provide more positive associations with healthcare environments for service users.

2. Project Overview

Hampson House project comprises the fit out of five floors of the recently constructed Earl building, located on North Earl Street, Dublin 1, as an Out Patients Department for the Rotunda Hospital. The relocation of the Rotunda’s current Out Patient department to Hampson House will free up space for the construction of a new Critical Care Wing on the west side of the existing Rotunda campus.

The Design Team for the fit out works is led by O’Connell Mahon Architects and the Key Stake holders are the Rotunda Hospital and the HSE.

The main pedestrian entrance to Hampson House is located on Earl Place along with access to the shared delivery yard. The Entrance lobby is located on the ground floor through which the 5 floors above can be accessed by lift and stairs. Plans will be issued at Stage 2 to shortlisted artists.

The HSE is developing this project in order to provide the following enhanced services to ambulatory Rotunda patients; maternal and paediatric outpatient departments, perinatal mental health, colposcopy and medical social work facilities, all within close proximity to the main Rotunda campus.

3. Project Concept

Hampson House’s Public Art Working Group has determined, that due to the nature of the site and the building’s end-users, the art work(s) being commissioned will be of the visual, physical form, including but not limited to photographs, prints, paintings, wall murals, sculptures, glass, ceramics etc.
The overarching concept for the artwork is, ‘Heartbeats of Dublin – Embracing every Journey’ encompassing the following themes, to:

  • Inspire hope and comfort,
  • Celebrate diversity and community,
  • Foster connections between mother and child,
  • Pay homage to Dublin’s Inner City and celebrate the landmarks in the local community.

The above concept is open to the artists’ interpretation but it is expected that the artwork(s) commissioned will be unique, site appropriate and reflective of the physical and social environment for which they are intended. The aim is that the artwork(s) will reflect the ethos and nature of the facility, and create a positive environment for the service users, staff and visitors.

4. Project Requirements / Considerations

The artwork(s) must,

  • Be permanent in nature, of a high standard with a reasonable life span of 20 years or more,
  • Be innovative and sensitive to the service users, visitors and staff who use, visit or work in the facility
  • Be cognisant of HSE commitment to delivering healthcare which is environmentally and socially sustainable,
  • Require low maintenance,
  • Take into account health and safety design considerations, cognisant of their environment and need to avoid risk to service users, staff and visitors who use, visit or work in the facility, particularly in relation to infection control, e.g. no water features, surfaces must be easily cleaned etc.

5. Project Budget

The total budget for this overall project is deemed to be circa €70,000. At the end of Stage 1, the Selection Panel will divide the budget between the shortlisted artists who will be invited to prepare proposals for various sites within the building.

The allocated Stage 2 budgets will be expected to cover the artist(s) fee, materials and all associated costs, including the following,

  • research and development,
  • attendance at meetings with relevant personnel e.g. builder, engineer etc. throughout the process,
  • materials and fabrication,
  • transportation,
  • installation,
  • engineering design (if required),
  • health and safety statements,
  • VAT,
  • Insurances,
  • any other costs and charges necessary to complete and install the artwork.

The budget may be allocated to a single artist or split between multiple artists as deemed appropriate by the Selection Committee.

6. The Commissioning Process – Application and Selection

The selection process will take the form of a two stage open competition. Stage one is open to all interested professional artists/ collaboratives, at any stage in their career/ experience, interested in working on a commission that can reflect the considerations of the Public Art Working Group, as previously outlined.

Selection will be based on the information submitted to establish the artist(s) competence to carry out the commission and suitability of their art practice to meet the project requirements.

Note, no designs or detailed proposals are required at Stage 1. The above information is to inform the applying artists of what will be expected, should they be shortlisted to develop their proposals.

The Selection Panel may:

  • Decide on one or more artists’ works; or
  • Reject any or all of the artworks submitted thus far; or
  • Decide to invite an individual artist to re-submit or submit an artwork for the committee’s consideration.

The Public Art Working Group may decide to shorten the selection process if they consider it necessary to do so. It should also be borne in mind that the Arts Committee can decide that no artwork is to be selected.

Artists should note that they should make themselves available for consultation with the Public Art Working Group at any stage of the competition’s decision-making process. Artists will be given reasonable advance notice of this consultation.

Deadline Reminder | Artist in the Community (AIC) Scheme Bursary Award from Create

The objective of the Artist in the Community (AIC) Scheme Bursary Award is to support individual professional artists in any artform to develop their collaborative socially engaged arts practice. There will be two awards of €15,000 awarded in 2024, offering the artists time to reflect on, and develop, their practice. One of the two bursary awards will be ringfenced for an early career/emerging artist with a track record in collaborative arts practice.

The closing date for applications is 5pm, Monday 29th July 2024.

About the Bursary Award(s)

The bursary award is aimed at artists whose practice centres on collaboration with individuals or groups/ communities (non-arts professionals).  Artists must have a track record of working collaboratively with communities of place or interest in the making and interpreting of art.

The purpose of the award is to support and nurture professional arts practice. This is a developmental bursary that is underpinned by the Arts Councils Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI, formerly EHRD) Policy and Create’s  Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy; it is aimed at practitioners who are facing particular barriers and/or challenges in developing their collaborative socially engaged arts practice.

The delivery of the bursary is assisted by a suite of partners who align with our work and the purpose of the AIC Scheme Bursary. These partners will assist in the dissemination of the bursary and support of the awarded artists with up to two support meetings, where appropriate. This will be negotiated with Create.

Potential partners include Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI), Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland (MASI), Irish Refugee Council (IRC), Irish Network Against Racism (INAR), Arts and Disability Ireland (ADI), Housing Action Now (HAN), Minding Creative Minds, National Women’s Council Ireland (NWCI), Irish Traveller Movement (ITM), Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL), ATD  Ireland (All Together in Dignity), Dublin LGBTQ+ Pride and Age and Opportunity. This list of allies and partners is continually growing. We are open to exploring further partnerships in order to address relevant themes and challenges identified by applicant artists.

The bursary of €15,000 will provide the selected artist with time and resources to engage with and reflect on their practice. This may include time to carry out research. More particularly, it allows the artist to consider key questions associated with their collaborative arts practice and collaborative methodologies.

Application Process

We encourage those interested in applying to attend an information session to learn more about the scheme, after which they may attend a one on one Bursary clinic. At this clinic, potential applicants can meet with Create and members of the Artist Mentor Panel to get advice and support on their potential ideas for the bursary.

The application takes the form of an Expression of Interest, to be completed online. This provides space for applicants to identify challenges and barriers to progressing their collaborative arts practice and outline how this bursary and the support it offers will enable a transformational impact on their arts practice. If you have questions regarding the bursary, consult our FAQ document.

Shortlisted applicants will be offered feedback and invited to meet with the decision making panel to discuss their expression of interest, following which two awards will be granted.

The closing date for applications is 5pm, Monday 29th July 2024.

Belfast Peer Support:  Group One

Session1:  Curator Talk and 1-1 Clinics

Curator Talk with Cecilia Graham

Cecelia Graham is a curator based in Belfast and Mid-Ulster in the north of Ireland. Her practice expands on collective knowledge gathering, alternative economies and labour structures as a means of challenging institutional models of hyper-productivity, disciplinary borders and power systems. Cecelia considers modes of working that emerge from collaborative and slow methods within agro-ecology, rural craft and generous, often invisible, labours such as repair and maintenance. Her curatorial practice seeks alternative modes of advocating for and supporting artists that resist strict, slick outputs.

Recent curatorial projects include Informal hedges, a research project with BAN (ongoing); Companion Planting, a series of gatherings (ongoing); We Have Never Been Only Human, online residency with Ella Yolande at CCA Derry~Londonderry (2023); Ornaments of Prospect at Catalyst Arts with Beau Beakhouse and Sadia Pineda Hameed (2023); Let it run all over me, site-specific installation at Lagan Weir with Christopher Steenson (2023); Queer na nÓg at PS2 with Bog Cottage, co-curated with Grace Jackson (2022).

Fellowships and residencies include: residency at Mustarinda, Finland (2024); Emerging Curators Group with British Art Network (2024); Jerwood Curatorial Fellowship 22-23; PS2 Curator-in-Residence (21-24); residency at The Field (2023); and AAMC and Art Fund Fellowship (2020). Cecelia is a previous Co-Director of Catalyst Arts, artist-led space in Belfast (2020-2023) and currently is the interim Curator of Civic Engagement at Void Art Centre, Derry.

Workshop | COMMUNE: Vision Board from Muine Bheag Arts

As part of the COMMUNE programme presented by Muine Bheag Arts, Aoife Ní Dhuinn and Falon Weaver will host a workshop on how to create a vision board.

What is a vision board? A vision board (also known as a dream board) is a creative motivation tool often used by life coaches to plan and define goals. By selecting and cutting out images from magazines/books, and arranging them as a collage, we can reflect on our desired futures — whether it’s building your dream community, finding the perfect job, cultivating and sustaining a vegetable garden with old friends, or travelling to a foreign country to make new ones.

The process involves creating a visual representation of your life plans, unfolding a narrative story for the path that lies ahead.

During the workshop, we will each create our own vision board, while reflecting on and discussing what it means to be an ‘adult’ today – how do we measure our own success? What are the challenges we face when transitioning to adulthood and how can the internet/social media perpetuate these challenges? How can working collaboratively help us achieve our goals? And how can we work towards our goals while embracing the unpredictability of our futures.

What to Expect
Creative Activity: Use provided materials to create your own dreamboard collage.
Discussion: Engage in conversations about adulthood, success, and autonomy.
Reflection: Reflect on your goals and the societal influences that shape them.

All necessary materials will be provided, including magazines, books, scissors, and glue. Just bring your creativity and an open mind.

Since 2021, Falon Weaver and Aoife Ní Dhuinn have shared a collaborative practice exploring their collective interest in existentialist thought, internet culture, and material exploration. Coming from respective backgrounds in painting and media, the duo use their collaborative practice as an opportunity to integrate these shared ideas through sculpture and installation. Their practice adopts a broad range of processes including concrete casting, ceramic sculpture, meme making and going for walks. Weaver and Ní Dhuinn’s ongoing body of work, ‘Blowing Kisses at High Time’, serves as a playful lament exploring an extended state of transition between childhood and adulthood that arises as an effect of housing crises, a dooming rate of climate change and growing up online. The work reflects on the paradox of yearning for youth while facing the reality of aging, responsibilities and the persistent nature of time.

Workshop | Summer School: Miniature Painting techniques at Dublin Port

Artist Samir Mahmood will provide a creative space to look at various traditional and contemporary techniques used in Indo-Persian miniature painting.

Beginning with a brief introduction to the practice and history of Indo-Persian miniature painting, Samir will show participants reproductions of works from prominent miniature painting schools along with contemporary works. The workshop will allow participants to engage with various materials, surfaces, pigments, and tools. Indo-Persian miniature painting consists of a set of traditional drawing and painting techniques that evolved from the art of manuscript illustration. These small but intricate works of art portray complex topics, characters, and stories such as historical encounters, battle scenes, mechanical devices, mystical experiences, and poems of love. The workshop will introduce participants to start creating paintings using a mix of traditional and contemporary mediums, tools, and techniques.

Samir Mahmood is a multi-disciplinary artist who blends elements of traditional and contemporary Indo-Persian miniature painting in his work. Samir’s artistic practice explores the intersection of Eastern and Western culture and art forms. He is passionate about integrating this genre of painting into the mainstream Irish art scene. He holds degrees from the National University of Ireland, Galway, and the Atlantic Technological University, and has received specialised training in miniature painting from Hast O Neest Lahore, Pakistan.

Workshop | Summer School: Scent Articulation, Creative and Codified at Dublin Port

Explore the implications of what we mean by ‘clean’ when talking about aromas with artist TBG+S Studio Artist Christopher McMullan

Explore the implications of what we mean by ‘clean’ when talking about aromas with artist Christopher McMullan through demonstrations, discussion and experimentation.

Engage with aromas associated with notions of cleanliness, such as rose, lemon, pine, orange blossom, soil etc, and try different ways of articulating these aromas, from the creative to the codified. There is no need for the English language, as the workshop will venture into mark making, colours, movements, sounds, and materials to communicate our perception. There will be a discussion about what we mean by the codified side of scent articulation, with a focus on the physiology and alchemy of olfaction, our sense of smell.

Meet at the orange cabin at the entrance to The Pumphouse, Alexandra Road, Dublin Port at 11:15am. Alternatively you can walk from The Point Luas stop at 11am with a member of staff.

Call for Participation | Arts Plan 2025-2029 Public Consultations from Cork County Council’s Arts Office

Cork County Council’s Arts Office is inviting members of the public to share their views about how the Council can promote the enjoyment of and participation in the arts in County Cork.

The new Arts Plan 2025-2029 will set out the direction, priorities and goals that will guide Cork County Council’s investment and services in the arts over the next five years.

The plan will have an impact on how the arts service supports artists, makers, and those who deliver arts programmes in professional and voluntary organisations. It will also set out how the Arts Service engages with arts audiences, hardly reached communities, youth audiences and educational settings.

Welcoming the consultation process, the Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Joe Carroll said:

Cultural life in County Cork is supported by an arts ecosystem that includes practicing artists, arts organisations, venues, festivals, voluntary arts practitioners, and many others working to promote the practice and enjoyment of the arts in their communities. Their dedication and commitment contribute significantly to the quality of life enjoyed by our citizens and also the positive experience visitors have in our county.

The Arts Office is seeking input from the arts sector, community and arts organisations, and the wider public who have an interest in the arts. The service is particularly interested to hear what value the arts have in people’s lives; how people currently engage with the arts; and how improved access to a creative activity might support wellbeing and quality of life.

They are opportunities to take part in this consultation both in person at public consultation meetings at locations around Cork County during July and online by attending a consultation meeting or by completing a survey. The closing date for submissions is Friday, the 16th of August.

The schedule for public consultations is as follows:
•   Tuesday July 16th, Mallow Library, 6-8pm.
•   Wednesday July 17th, Castle Hotel Macroom, 6-8pm.
•   Thursday July 18th, Online, 6-8pm – email ar...@corkcoco.ie for the link to attend.
