Don Draper Drunk

Hey Stu,

Core Wound

If you've spent any time with us at Script Anatomy, you know we're serious about Core Wound. That painful, seminal moment that shaped your character's deepest flaw, which can also, at times, be their greatest strength. Like Don Draper's stolen identity.

Even though you need to know your character's core wound, your audience doesn't always have to. Often, we never see on screen what made someone who they are, but when we do, and it's right for the story, it's extraordinary.

While teaching in Beijing, I shared two or three of my own core wounds with the cohort, and the flaws that grew out of them. Then I asked the room to share theirs.

There was a writer in the room who was quiet and reserved. It was the first day — the cohort barely knew us, and they barely knew each other. So I was genuinely surprised when he volunteered to share something deeply personal and painful. The room went still. Hearts broke. And even though what wounds each of us is different, everyone in that room felt it. Everyone related.

Learning that one thing about him shifted something in the group. A protectiveness formed. A level of support that might not have come as quickly, or run as deep, or surfaced at all.

That's what Core Wound does on the page, too. It earns loyalty. It gives your character room to be messy, flawed, human — and forgiven.

Can't Win If You Don't Submit

There's a free space in J. Holtham's group, so grab that while you can! Other than that, all the other groups are fully subscribed for now. But if you're interested in going on the waitlist, and you've done three Script Anatomy cources, then email me at taw...@scriptanatomy.com

There's still room in Phillip Van's feature lab starting on Wednesday, so jump in, feature writers!

Happy writing, everyone!
