Our most recent Season concert on Good Friday was a very special evening of music-making that will live in the memory for some time. Whether it was the beautiful, breathtaking playing of our wonderful leader, Ioana Petcu-Colan, performing Vaughan Williams's The Lark Ascending or the power and emotion of Emma Morwood, Ben McAteer and Belfast Philharmonic Choir singing Brahms's stunning A German Requiem, there was a lot to treasure. A highlight of 2025/26? Possibly!
It's time to turn our attention to what's coming next, however, and we return to the Ulster Hall next Friday for a concert that is all about virtuosity - whether that is from the featured soloist, or in a piece that makes soloists out of the whole orchestra. Following that, we're out and about with two On Your Doorstep concerts that bring the outdoors to Omagh and Derry~Londonderry.
Read on to learn more and as always, you can click images and links to go to the Ulster Orchestra website for more information and to book tickets. We'll see you at a concert soon.

Aisling from our Second Violin and Gabriel from our Double Bass sections give you a little more insight into Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra.

On Friday 17 April, we return to the Ulster Hall for our next concert, A Lifetime for Music, which shines a light on the power of a solo.
We welcome Tom Fetherstonhaugh back to conduct this concert and he is firstly joined by the phenomenal pianist Alim Beisembayev to perform Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3. This is a formidable tour de force for the soloist, in scale, in technical ability and in emotional richness, but it's worth mastering as the rippling melodies of the concerto are full of melancholy and heart-rending drama. In fact, if you're a regular on Instagram you may have spotted a photo of Tom and Alim after some rehearsal time together in London for this concert - that tells its own story about just how big the demands of the concerto are!
The second half of the concert turns the spotlight round to our own players, as each orchestra section becomes the soloist in Bartók's vivid, tuneful, joyous Concerto for Orchestra. Click the video above to hear two of our string players, Aisling and Gabriel, talk about Bartók's piece and click the link below to book your tickets.

It's a Mendelssohn medley! Let yourself be whisked away to the dramatic scenery of Scotland with this short sample of what's in store On Your Doorstep.

We head back out on the road at the end of the month and will be On Your Doorstep in Strule Arts Centre, Omagh on Friday 24 April and Derry~Londonderry's Guildhall on Saturday 25 April, with a concert that will conjure up the landscape of Scotland and the courtly elegance of the Baroque era.
Felix Mendelssohn fell in love with Scotland on holiday and the resulting musical inspiration produced two of his best-known and loved works, the Hebrides Overture and his Third Symphony, nicknamed Scottish. From his depiction of the sea around the coast and even a bit of Hibernian thunder, both evocatively depict the dramatic scenery of Scotland.
From the Scottish Highlands, we travel to the Norwegian Fjords. Grieg’s Holberg Suite is dancing and utterly delightful, while Ulster Orchestra violinist Gongbo Jiang is soloist in Christian Sinding’s lyrical Suite in the Old Style.
