Stories of the Week: Contest #345

Welcome back to your weekly wrap-up of the Reedsy Prompts contest! This week’s tales are hot off the press, so settle in and check out our latest contest winner, the runners-up, and recent popular entries in your preferred genres below.

Also, don’t forget to like and comment on your favorites! Our authors work hard on their submissions every week — your support and feedback mean the world to them.

Winner 🏆

Windows to the Soul by Helen Tynan

In this tense tale, an estranged mother appears on her daughter's doorstep with a single suitcase. Will these two women reconcile their differences and become part of each other's lives once more, or will they remain strangers?

💡 Inspired by the prompt: Write about someone who must fit their whole life in one suitcase.

📌 Why it won: A stunningly layered story that blew the judges away. The dynamic between Jane and Una feels so realistic, the plot moves at just the right pace, and that grand reveal at the end was both chilling and heartbreaking. The author did an incredible job showing, not telling, through tension, mystery, and subtlety. A well-deserved win.

Runners-up 🏅

The #944 to Tabriz by Scott Christenson

On a train out of Isfahan, a former academic reflects on the life he's leaving behind and what it has cost him.

💡 Inspired by the prompt: Write about someone who must fit their whole life in one suitcase.

Scarf Pipes by Kelsey R Davis

Meet James, a middle-aged man whose dreams of freedom are the only things keeping him company in his monotonous marriage...

💡 Inspired by the prompt: Write a story in which something doesn’t go according to plan.
