New and Events

Studio Brick
December 2012

Dear friends,

Before we get to upcoming events - as we are no longer using Studio Brick as a gallery space, I've decided to turn down this mailing list. I'll be sending out an invitation to join my personal mailing list (http://groups.google.com/group/thomasparkphoto) shortly; you can also follow me on Facebook at http://facebook.com/ThomasParkPhoto or on my updated blog at http://thomasparkphoto.com.

If any of you joined the list via one of Matt Freedman's events, you can keep up with his work at www.LaFigaProject.com, or like his pages at http://facebook.com/MattFreedmanPhotography and http://facebook.com/LaFigaProject

Upcoming: Photography + Lighting Workshops with Thomas Park

Sunday, January 20, 2013

thomasparkphoto.com/workshops

New to photography and interested in expanding your creative and technical horizons? Experienced photographer wanting to learn about studio lighting? Looking for a unique gift for a photographer in your life?

I was honoured to be an invited instructor at the Seattle Erotic Art Festival in both 2011 and 2012. I devised a new workshop format for the festival, pairing a class on core photographic concepts with a class on studio lighting.

The photography workshop uses a systematic approach modeled after kata. Each kata “form” will use intuitive shooting exercises to introduce a concept or tool, including: elements of exposure, color balance, exposure and reading histograms.  Discover the creative possibilities of using different lenses or focal lengths. Not much experience photographing people? This is the difference that professional models make – a pro model will help you to understand how to pose and direct, and help you to get a great shot.

The lighting workshop will focus on the use of studio flashes (or “strobes”). Emphasis will be on learning through active participation; we will build up several looks step-by-step, seeing how each light or modifier contributes to the final look. Learn how to get consistent lighting results.

Both workshops are limited to 5 participants - please visit thomasparkphoto.com/workshops to reserve a seat!

$209, fully refundable within 2 weeks of the workshop date.

Also on the topic of photographic education, I've recently had a pair of articles on photographic composition go live on DPReview (Digital Photography Review). The first article, Compositional Rules, discusses several common so-called "rules of composition", such as the Rule of Thirds and the Golden Ratio and gives examples of these can be applied to improve your images.

The second article, Breaking the Rules, digs a little deeper into ways that we can subvert these types of rules with a bit of cheeky skepticism - using the concepts that underpin the rules in order to gain some of their benefit, without being overly formulaic. Please drop by and give them a read!  They're each 3 pages long; the page navigation can be easy to miss.

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season, and hope to see you on my new mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/thomasparkphoto!

Best regards,

Thomas Park
