Studio Brick
January 2009 #1

Hi everybody,

What a year it's been!   Thank you for your support of Studio Brick and our artists.  We hope you've been having wonderful holidays and staying safe and warm.

Now that the snow is melting, we'll have an New Year's open house for first Thursday, January 1 from 6 - 9pm.  The show from last month is still up, so please come by if you missed the exhibit in December.

Best wishes for the new year!

The Water Trade: Pictures of the Floating World

Photography by Thomas Park, 2000 - 2008.

Exhibit open Thursday, January 1, 6 - 9 pm

This is a mini-retrospective of work shot in Japan or inspired by traditional Asian arts over the course of this decade.

Many of the images represent a return to my background in black and white printmaking and street photography - shot hand-held with available light on antique medium-format film cameras.

I found that this approach, in addition to being practical, suited the subject matter.  Fleeting glimpses of strangers captured from the point of view of the anonymous observer, surreptitious views detached and yet also wholly interested.

Studio Brick is located at 214 1st Ave S, in the lower-level arcade of Pioneer Sq's historic Grand Central building, between Washington and Main.

If the main entrance is closed, you can access the arcade via a staircase to the left of the main building doors, next to the bookstore.  Go downstairs and walk to the south end of the hallway.  Look out for the sandwich board with our logo, on the sidewalk.

The exhibit will be open from 6 - 9 pm on Thursday, January 1st.  Come by to have a New Year's drink with us!

Best regards,

Thomas Park

Special update - studio lighting workshop

Studio Brick
January 2009 #2

Hi everybody,

Did you know that you can take workshops on studio lighting and photography at Studio Brick?

The next workshop will be taught by Thomas Park on February 22 - the topic of this workshop will be "Simplified lighting - creative control with one to two lights".

When: 12 - 3 or 4pm, Sunday Feb. 22

Where: Studio Brick, 214 1st Ave S, Lower level, Pioneer Sq., Seattle

What: A workshop focusing on lighting possibilities with one to two lights and simple lighting modifiers.

How much: $120, fully refundable up to 2 weeks before the workshop.

The workshop classes are limited to 5 people in order to give everybody plenty of time to shoot.  We generally have 3 sections - a lecture and walkthough of the gear we'll be using, then two separate hands-on shooting sessions (often with different models).

The topics covered in the workshops are taught in the context of fashion or beauty photography, but the techniques and equipment is by and large applicable to most forms of photography.  This is also a good way to see what working with a professional model is like.

** There are currently 2 spots open for this workshop.  Payment in full is required to reserve a space; please contact me at (my first name)@thomasparkphoto.com to sign up.

What you need:

You will need a camera with a hotshoe (or PC socket - this is different from a USB socket) on which you can manually control the ISO, shutter speed and aperture.  Any SLR and some point and shoot cameras would work.

About me:

I started out about 15 years ago as a black and white photographer and printmaker shooting photos of random stuff that I found interesting - this was often people hanging out on the street.  From there, I went on to study photography in Paris and Boston, then began shooting fashion and fashion influenced beauty + fine art work almost exclusively in the late 90's.

Feedback from past workshop participants:

•  "I wanted to send a quick note to say thanks to Thomas Park for the Lighting and Models workshop. The class was great. We got a nice overview of lighting, detailed walkthrough of light set up and 2 hours with a professional model. She was a trooper posing for 10 people."

•  "Worth every penny. I encourage anyone that has a desire to shoot models or get some additional insight into studio set up to check it out."

•  "Overall, kudos for the presentation & the workshop. It was great!"

Studio Brick is located at 214 1st Ave S, in the lower-level arcade of Pioneer Sq's historic Grand Central building, between Washington and Main.

Best regards,

Thomas Park

From the artists:

Two women, two cameras, and two very passionate souls are offering the public a chance to view the word through their lens, their eyes, and their hearts.

The love of life and all it has to offer is the inspiration for this show, which may sound vague to some, but it gives the artists a chance to show a variety of work, angles, and subjects all in the celebration of life. We invite you to stop by, take a seat, and enjoy the view...

Studio Brick - Events newsletter
April 2009

Hello friends,

April will be a quiet month at Studio Brick - we've all been busy working on various new projects, so the studio will be closed for Art Walk this coming Thursday.  Stay tuned for some exciting news regarding a local art festival coming up in May, however!

Not to wax sentimental, but thank you all for your support over the last year!  We started working on renovating and building out Studio Brick one year ago.  It's been wonderful to have some many of you come out each month to share your company and love of art with us.  We look forward to seeing you soon at the next opening.

Studio Brick is located at 214 1st Ave S, in the lower-level arcade of Pioneer Sq's historic Grand Central building, between Washington and Main.  The entrance to the arcade stairwell is next to Fireworks, just north of the main entrance.  Look for our sign on the sidewalk!

Best regards,

Thomas Park
