ACCESS & EQUITY UNDER ATTACK
COMMUNITY FORUM ON PRESERVING THE TRANSITIONAL YEAR PROGRAMME
PLEASE JOIN US AT A TOWN HALL MEETING
MARCH 21 2009 1-3PM OISE, RM 5250
Access and equity enrich the university by creating diversity in the
student experience, voice and body and are essential to preserve so
that we all have an opportunity to reach our potentials. Previously,
the University of Toronto (U of T) has shown a commitment to access
and equity by supporting programs such as the Transitional Year
Programme (TYP). TYP is a unique access program for those who due to
financial barriers, family
difficulties or other circumstances beyond their control do not have
the formal educational background to enter university through
conventional routes. This program exemplifies the concept of equitable
access to education, and TYP must be maintained and developed in order
to preserve access and equity at U of T. However, this essential
programme is currently under threat from budget and staffing cuts.
This will greatly impair the
university’s ability to provide equitable and assessable education. We
must act now. It is essential that a real vision for access and equity
at the university is formed immediately, and existing programs like
TYP are preserved and strengthened.
COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE URGED TO JOIN US TO DISCUSS HOW TO:
- Preserve the TYP's Atonomy, Staffing and Funding
- Create a real vision for access and Equity at the University
With Special addresses from:
Zanana Akande
Former Minister of Education
Keren Braithwaite
Co-Founder of TYP
Rod Michalko
Head of Disability Studies
and others...Join us for a community forum about how to maintain and
strengthen access and equity in education. Hear from an amazing panel
of life-long activists and join us afterwards for free refreshments
and an open discussion Together we can ensure that the university
honors and strengthens its commitment to access and equity.
