Hadeeth 10: Restricting oneself to the Pleasant Halaal

by an-Nawawî

On the authority of Abu Hurairah (radiAllaahu 'anhu) who said: The Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

Allaah the Almighty is Good and accepts only that which is good. And verily Allaah has commanded the Believers to do that which He has commanded the Messengers. So the Almighty has said:
"O (you) Messengers! Eat of the Tayyibaat [all kinds of Halaal (legal) foods], and perform righteous deeds." [23:51]

and the Almighty has said:

"O you who believe! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you" [2:172]

Then he mentioned [the case] of a man who, having journeyed far, is dishevelled and dusty, and who spreads out his hands to the sky saying "O Lord! O Lord!", while his food is Haraam (unlawful), his drink is Haraam, his clothing is Haraam, and he has been nourished with Haraam, so how can [his supplication] be answered ?! [Narrated by Muslim.]

Summary

  • That Allaah accepts only that which is good
  • That every believer is obliged to do that which the Messengers were obliged to do (except what is specifically exempted)
  • That every Muslim must eat only Halaal and must take great care that he has avoided eating whatever he knew to be Haraam or suspicious
  • That performing righteous deeds is waajib for every one of us
  • That frequently we turn to Allaah for help while we do not try to eat, drink, maintain ourselves and earn in a pure way
  • That if we do not take care of the above then our prayers will not be effective
  • That it is correct to raise ones hands while asking Allaah for something

The Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:

There are seven whom Allah will shade in His Shade on the Day when there is no shade except His Shade: a just ruler; a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; two men who love each other for Allah's sake, meeting for that and parting upon that; a man who is called by a woman of beauty and position [for illegal intercourse], but he says: 'I fear Allah', a man who gives in charity and hides it, such that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives in charity; and a man who remembered Allah in private and so his eyes shed tears.'

Narrated by Abu Hurairah & collected in Sahih al-Bukhari (english trans.) vol.1, p.356, no.629 & Sahih Muslim (english trans.) vol.2, p.493, no.2248
