Hi everyone!

With the first two weeks of school behind us (at least for MSI and MSIIs!) we can start to think about all of the fun things we do outside of the classroom- I’m talking about SHR, of course!

There is a lot to catch up on, so I will try to organize this email the best way I can…

1.What’s Going on with Students for Human Rights Now?

We had a speaker in mind for the first September meeting that had to switch to a later month due to an increasingly busy schedule. Other members of SHR have been asking around to find a speaker, but with such short notice it has proven to be a bit tricky. SO…

2. The First Meeting

It looks like we will have a more “self-guided” journal club for this first meeting. I am actually excited about this, because this could allow for a better meet-and-greet with our new members! We can also talk more about the interests of the group and what people hope for PHR this year.

The best day for the MSI/MSII schedule will be to have it on Thursday September 17th.

At that first meeting, we will have email signups for new members, and the ability for people to choose a month to organize the topic/speaker.  However, if you already know of a good speaker and want to "sign up" for a month now, feel free to email/call/text me and I will put you in the calendar early.

3.    What Needs to be Done (aka Input From the Group!)

I am more than happy to host the first meeting, although I don’t have a very large place. I think I could totally make it work, but if any of you have a better (aka more spacious) place please email me and I will put your address on the announcement when I make it next week. Also, if anyone has any suggestions about the journal article we will discuss, please send it my way! If I don’t get any suggestions then I am happy to find one, but I wanted to open it up to the group!

 4.    One More Thing…

TOMORROW is the Interest Fair and SHR has a table. As of right now, we have a few people who will plan on being at the table, but we all have other group tables to manage as well. Therefore, if anyone would like to help out that would be AWESOME. The fair is from 5pm-7pm in the lawn between Ed1 and Ed2. There will be food!

Thanks for hanging in there for the long email! As a recap, we will plan on having our first meeting on Thursday September 17th. If anyone wants to volunteer their home for the meeting, please let me know. If anyone has suggestions for a journal article to read/discuss for that meeting, please send it my way! Details should be hammered out by early next week and I will make up an announcement to disperse to class emails and Facebook.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again!

Hey all!

I’ll offer my house again. There’s lots of room, but I know it’s far…The invitation is out there…

In the context of what has been happening in Hungary and with our population in Denver, I was thinking it would be appropriate to get a few journals about refugees/medical care, etc.
Thoughts? I’m willing to look some stuff up, but don’t want to dig unless it’s what we want to do.

Thanks all!
Carrie

Thanks for offering up a venue, Carrie! I think that topic sounds like a good idea. I'm definitely interested in finding out more.

Hey all,

I think it's a little harder to find "data-driven" articles on the crisis, but there are a good number of articles detailing the crisis and what is being done about it. I am attaching three, which offer varying perspectives. The first is from The Economist, a British-run weekly, which gives a great summary and analysis of current issues. The second is a letter from MSF detailing the medical side of the crisis and what is needed to treat this special population. Last, an article from NEJM from a while ago talking about lessons from previous refugee crises and how it relates to Hurricane Katrina. I'm including it because it's interesting to see what parts of the article are applicable to what is going on today and what aspects make it less relevant. Let me know what you think.
