Social Justice League,

Today at the regular meeting in Canfield the group decided to have a special get-together to decide on our first campaign.

The meeting will be in the library courtyard on Wednesday 4/4 and will start at 9PM.

It would be nice if people could write out their proposals in a couple sentences. We will go around and let people read and explain. Then there will be a discussion to decide by the end of the evening on something we can start to seriously plan out.

For the sake of time, just describe the set of policy and/or structural changes the campaign would change at Bennington (or beyond). We will save in-depth fleshing out of strategies and tactics for Sunday or another special meeting, although some discussion of these things will be inevitable.

Remember that the campaign should be something achievable in the short term, and something that can build broad support and involvement for the long-term.

We decided the Wednesday meeting will only be an hour long, with time to talk more in the student center afterwards. (Lauren's getting beers & Peter will have anarchist zines for us to fold).

maybe it doesn't make sense for me to buy beer for this one because if we're gonna go to the student center, they have beer there.

Word - looking forward to this. In addition to folding zines, could we continue to make tiny tents?

Hey guys! Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to make it to the meeting Wednesday, :( But here's something you all might be interested in? Maybe we can post something on this site as one of our first actions

Thanks!
Love,
Natalie

Hey Justice League,

I'm looking forward to tonight; I'm sure we'll start to get something off the ground...

Andrew Boyd shared some PDFs with me. These are pages from a book he just finished compiling with The Yes Men, among many other creative activist groups. They address three important ideas when it comes to putting together campaigns, and tactics for direct action. I thought they'd be helpful to share here:

I'll also bring em to the library courtyard tonight.

Take Care,

Forest

Justice League,

I got pulled into a rehearsal. If there are minutes/any notes/comments or a tl;dr on tonight's meeting it would be rad if I could catch up with someone.

Many Bacons,
Kim.

Lauren took some notes that she might send, but you can of course talk to any of us who were there in person.

It was a great meeting considering the midterm fury and fervor.

hey gang/friends,

here are some brief notes from the meeting on Wednesday at 9 PM where we talked about proposals for the first action. Reminder: these were proposals, we didn't try to tackle the bulk of the logistics of the proposals.

Ideas: three main = 1. 99% Spring (which has something happening in Bennington, the town of - if I'm not mistaken. It was said that it would make sense/be good to attend that event to start to build a relationship with people in town doing this stuff)
2. Broader topic - spacial/student run spaces
3. April = Sexual Harassment Awareness Month - another group of students independently started investigating Bennington's sexual harrassment polices/started that discussion about (is it fair to say?) "rape culture at Bennington" (is it appropriate to ask questions like this over email where I am interpreting the role of notetaker as a more neutral than a usual email to the group?)

FOREST - will email the group the Andrew Boyd articles which Forest described as "roadmaps to planning actions"
WE - will familiarize ourselves with the Andrew Boyd on Sunday at 3 in Canfield.
CASEY - emailed us SAFER's evaluation of Bennington's sexual harassment policy.
WE - made zines that Peter printed out. We will add a little color and mark the zines saying something along the lines of "brought to you by Social Justice League. Meetings @ 3 PM, Sundays, Canfield" (can someone clarify?) We will distribute them in public places - i.e. d-hall tables, bathrooms, houses, places where kids gather and wait and don't want to look like they're not doing anything.
WABASH Survey (a 4 year long survey Ron Cohen and Eva C-S are doing to look at "party culture on campus") - Me and Forest will request transcripts of the focus groups, which is something the school offered as an option to interested students.

Questions I have that I'm not clear about and I don't feel comfortable reporting them in a "minutes" type email to inform people who weren't there: Did we settle on a proposed action?

I apologize if this got a little wordy. I wanted to really be thorough.
always, solidarity,
Lauren
