Is there anyone still out there, on this list? If so, has anyone seen
this webpage?:

http://disabilitydischarge.com/Application-Process/

I am particularly wondering about Section 2 of that page---"Social
Security Administration Determination". According to this, it is now
possible to use an SSD printout, to get loans discharged---which
wasn't possible, just a couple years ago. Is this for real? When did
the law change? I have been lied-to, countless times, by the D of E.
It has been a 15 year fight, ever since the D of E "lost:" my first
disability claim (I have now been classified as "disabled", by the
SSA, for over 20 years).

Thanks.
Dustin

Hi Logan,

I for one am still here. I'd like to think most others from the group suddenly became wealthy and their SL woes are a thing of the past. I'd hate to think people are despairing over this as I am still. Sorry I haven't heard about this SSD option. I hope it is something that will help you.

I am still here, too. Not sure about the printout but we are all still getting screwed. Just keep trying.

I've been reading that starting in july... wow time flies when you're sick and not paying attention... that they were going to link it somehow to see if you are receiving disability and making it mainstream your loans through quicker and easier.  the bill collectors actually offered me that obama plan even though I was long into collections.. and they accepted $5/month for 9 months to get me out of default and then likely that will turn into 0$ when I can reassess the actual plan. It's the one where you pay what you can (calculated) for 25 years and then the loans are dismissed.  My perkins however she is making me the old way and I need to go to my new dr and gethim to sign the forms etc but this time I will attach all my disability letters (before they said do not send anything else).

This is such a huge relief. I feel like I might actually get somewhere now... until someone overturns this plan of course. So if you are in default tell them... Look.. unless I can pay something like $5 a month this phone call isn't going anywhere. The lady I got of course had to go through all the options first and she was nice.. every other guy I got screamed at me. So thankfully... it might work out.

Glad to hear that there are still a few folks on this list. As an
update, I have been doing some web research on this new option, of
using the Social Security Disability determination, to have loans
discharged. Apparently, it just went into effect, as of July 1, of
this year, In other words, less than 2 weeks ago!

So how do you get a letter that says when you are reviewed?? I don't see where you would get that I know they give priority to people who have 7 year reviews as opposed to 3 etc.

Well, I know that most of the info is on the standard Social Security
printout, which can be obtained at any SS office (takes about 5
minutes, at the window). Don't remember if it has the time to the
next review. Never noticed. But, it is the paperwork accepted by all
other social services.

I have written to the D of E, to get more details. Hopefully, I will
hear-back soon.

I'm still here too  - fortunate to be half way through public service forgiveness - but who knows for how long. Once they have enough old Walmart greeters, then they'll start finally easing up on the student loans.
Direct has been a good choice; the payments follow income guidelines closely; It's particularly pleasing to know that I
can just up and die and they don't get another cent. The SSI disability game seems to depend so much on which office and whether you have an attorney who specializes in SSI law.  I just read an article that SSI disability is calculated to be totally
spent by 2017 - about 6 years sooner than SSI retirement.  Let's face it, the sooner you use it, the sooner you'll get at least some of your money back..

The government student loan forgiveness program is about the best deal at this point for anyone with substantial loans. (Private loans are another story & there isn't much that can be done there). Once in the program, your credit score will rebound. The program makes it impossible for all but the "determined-to-fail" to screw up.
The forgiven amount under the Dept. of Education Student Loan Forgiveness Program is NOT taxable and payments are proportional to income. One can register for the program immediately with a form and government employer signature.  The only caveat is that one work in government  public service job(s) during the 10 year repayment. Two or more part time government jobs will be accepted/qualify as long as the hours total full time (40 hours). One does not have to necessarily work the exact position they obtained a degree for. What is important is that it is in a *public service* job, such as social work, education, etc. in some capacity for a governmental entity as employer. In some circumstances, a nonprofit organization can be a qualifying employer, While many of you may turn your nose up at such jobs, keep in mind that consolidating under the DOE Direct loan program of any outstanding Staff/NonStaff loans is the best step towards either keeping and maintaining your good credit, or restoring it. A slow process but doors will begin to open again. This can get you out of the downward spiral of unemployment and student loan debt. The SL Forgiveness Program is in it's 9th year and along with the creation of the Consumer Protection Bureau that actually has some real teeth, has been successful so far. Next year, 2017 will be the first year of  10 yr.completed forgiveness under the program and it will be interesting to see how many apply successfully. For more information about the program as well as the Teacher student loan forgiveness program, see:
https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service
Ten years goes pretty quickly  - "indefinitely" does not. Consider too,  a little public service help *everyone.
