Many so-called "progressives" are weary of this issue. They don't want to do anything that would call the Student Aid program into question and make it the next target of the right-wing onslaught against "big government." They see the Student Aid program as the only thing that allows poor and middle class young people to go to school. If debt is the cost of that, so be it--there are repayment programs that, in their view, make this tolerable. Some people have been raising the alarm about student debt: Dylan Ratigan, Bill Maher, etc. but in a very confused and inconsistent way.

You'd think the progressives would be our natural allies on this issue, but alas there are complex political and institutional forces pulling in different directions there.

The right wing is also very conflicted on it: There is a libertarian current that is appalled by what a big government program is do students and tax payers, but there is also a big "personal responsibility-pay your debts" element and another group of corporate stooges that are very close to the former FFELP and private lenders.

Its a complex issue indeed.

I have been reading all of your posts since 2005 and more importantly
the last most recent ones. All of you are right on. Since 2001 when SM
placed me into default after I contacted them to DOUBLE my payments
they placed me into default, sent their papers to DHHS, sold my
private loans to ?????? it took me 10 years to find out who Cha Ching
and collected all monies they get to collect without any due process.
I lost my 2 private surgical practices, home, credit, 8 year marriage
and reputation in my career and personally.
I wrote a book about my experience called "Educationally
Screwed" (registered copyright) and sent it to every imaginable
politician one can think of this last April. Do you think I got 1
reply. Also sent a copy to every "progressive radio and tv host",
    again no reply.
In 2001 when this nightmare began I contacted my Attorney General,
my district Congressman, my district Senator (both on the education
and labor committies in the house), hired a lawyer you name it I've
done it as recently as April 2012.
You are all correct, money trumps justice. I fully advocate that
all graduates Do Not Even Pay the First Payment until we are heard and
justice prevails. At this point, what do you have to loose - a minimum
wage job, savings?, reputation?, home? You will loose them anyway so
let's make a 1 Trillion dollar statement! Remember, more than 15
years of people like us bumping up against the exact same road blocks.
    The definition of insanity is????????????

Pretty insane then again they guy that reported Madoff to the SEC had done
so repeatedly year after year but to deaf ears. I'm just not a believer in
two wrongs amounting to a right. I would not advocate not paying unless you
truly have a hardship. I gave SM the money they demanded but with that
they hung themselves with the rope I gave them. Perhaps right now no one
gives a?,!! but in due time that will change as already the issue is
getting more attention. I know SM knows this as well because they attempted
to cover up/miss attribute the payment. They were unsuccessful. I point out
that is due to my continuous payments and following the rules of the game.
    They are not busting my chops; I'm busting theirs;

We are 1 Trillion dollars strong - not weak! Ones political view does
not matter. Every politician/supreme court judge/district judge ie...
people who can stop this can not because Wall Street owns these loans
- no one else! Wall Street is betting on the graduates altruism of I
borrowed it, I owe it. Hog wash! PREDATORY student loans are not moral
or legal loans, neither are derivatives. Maybe ONE of us has the
tools to keep kicking it in their face, but 1 out of 1 Trillion
dollars worth. Did I mention that I had already paid $70,000 dollars
when SM thru me into default without any cause? Did I mention after
10 years of trying to right the wrong even Arne Duncan doesn't care.
Do the research you need to to clear your conscious of paying your
debt off, that WILL have it's intrest rates doubled in July - Did you
sign up for that? No other legal contract has the justice department
look the other way when one party wants to ignore it.
When your ready, join me. The possibility of the FED RESERVE losing
another 1 trillion dollars will move the heaven and earth for our
justice!!!! One should be pissed off that they dare to increase the
interest rates x 2. Dr. Deb
