Hello All.
I wanted to kick off the new state group with every bit of help that I
can think of to ensure you all hit the ground running. Things have
really accelerated on this issue over the past year or so, and so the
more information you have going into it, the better! As things
coalesce nationally, I won't be able to participate fully in this, or
any of the state chapters...and hopefully Aaron will appreciate that!
You all know the lay of the land over there far better than I, and so
it really is only you who can make the change happen. So just a
couple of fundamental points here now for you, and I will follow up
over the next week with more as is appropriate.
First, our mission s very simple: We aim to convince Congress to
restore standard consumer protections to student loans. We have
developed an extremely strong argument for this that has proven to be
indisputable up to this point. A good summary of this is posted at
the website:

Another VERY valuable link for those of you who are absolutely baffled
by the confusing system, and need to get your feet on the ground:
Don't be ashamed if you aren't sure (for example) about the
difference between public and private loans, Everyone is,
initially...and for good reason! This will help quickly:

Our argument doesn't require you to publicly air any dirty laundry,
personally. In fact, you would do well, as you talk to decision
makers around town to resist the urge to simply complain about your
own situation. When you do this, you really weaken your position
because the person listening will hear someone "whining", instead of
advocating for good public policy!
Ultimately, these people will often ask what your personal connection
to this issue is, it is only then that you should feel comfortable
talking about your unique situation. It will be well received, after
you have established a connection based on knowledge, and respect.
Ok...that's it for now....more soon-,
