During the observation, I noticed a student's odd behavior he
exhibited in class. The teacher told me that he was experiencing some
of the symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome, a mild form of autism. That
made me wonder with all of these questions- he is diagnosed with
Asperger's what changes will his family have to make? Is it disorder
hereditary? Will he able to live a normal life? Will he have to attend
a special school? I don't know, maybe I'll find out more on
internet. But if any one of you experienced that with a student, please
share.

Amanda, I haven't experienced quite what you are experiencing with the
student just finding out about it, but I had a student with Asperger's
when I did my student teaching in the fall. He was pretty
well-adjusted. There would be times when he had tunnel vision on a
certain task and became really frustrated if a single approach did not
work. It was very difficult for him to see other options, and to be
willing to explore. He didn't seem to socialize much with his peers,
he seemed more comfortable talking to me or other adults. He is highly
intelligent and picked up 2-point perspective faster than anyone in any
class of mine. That might have been because he really thrived on
precise instruction.
Unfortunately I don't know that much about the syndrome, but as
teachers I guess all we can do is try our best to provide as much
support, encouragement, and as many oppurtunities as we can.
