Sami and I were sent the promotional materials (all together in one document) for the textile event: a flyer to print out and distribute, commitment invitations, incentive contest entry forms, tax donation receipts, and a list of the banners they can provide us with for our event. Should I ask for some banners? If so, I can let them know and they can set some aside for one of us to pick up!
Our pick up schedule is for November 8th at about 3:30 to 4:00 pm.
Are we sure we don't want their help with publicity? (Does anyone know if there is a charge for that or for banners? )For their help we don't need to give any personal information, and I was told this can only help increase our collection. If we choose to reconsider, they’d love to help us get the word out.
One other important piece of information, our goal was to raise about $900. They clarified that we’ll need close to 9,000 lbs to raise $900, since they pay 10¢ per pound of textiles. This is a lot to come up with, but I know that with everyone's help we definitely have a chance at reaching this goal. They also offered help on coming up with some promotional tactics to reach our goal as well. I'd love to hear feedback so I can respond to her as soon as possible so that this event proves to be a success. I apologize for the lengthy email or if any of this has already been sorted out. I'm just making sure we stay on top of all of this and communicate with each other and the recycling company since they have been so helpful and kind thus far.
Thanks for your time,
Bonnie Colwell
I still have a couple of banners from our last event – they generally take them back but they forgot to grab them. I honestly don’t know if they are in English or Spanish but either way, they should help. Last time we did an event, they provided publicity by way of their Facebook page but that was it. I would say that you should definitely take all the help they are willing to offer (I’m pretty certain that there is no charge).
Between our two collection events last time, we collected more than 16,000 pounds of textiles – so I know the 9,000 lbs is doable! But – you’re going to have to hit it hard. Collections from friends and family will definitely be helpful but any place with large amounts of bulk textiles is where the money is at. Call or visit hotels (old sheets / curtains / bedspreads), spas (old towels), linen supply companies (there are tons), dry cleaners (abandoned clothing), antique shops (get donations of fabrics but often don’t want them), fabric stores, sewing schools / clubs (scraps), running groups (old shoes!), dance schools (old shoes!), Craigslist (often free clothes listed), garage sales (go at the end and offer to take all of their leftovers), swap meets (one of our students found that tons of stuff is thrown away after most swap meets), etc. With any luck, we will fill their truck and they’ll have to make a second trip down to get all of our textiles! If you visit / call places, please send an email to the group so we aren’t doubling up…teamwork doesn’t seem work!
This definitely has the potential to be extremely successful but it’s going to take a lot of work. Since you have committed and the company is driving up from San Diego, you will need to work very hard so that they aren’t wasting their gas, time, and effort – and so that you all can make some serious cash! I’ve seen how you can all come together to make something happen (Halloweentown – wow!) so I know this will be great!

If they’re willing to give us one more, that would be great!
