Hi space fans!

We at LSSH (Linköping Space Studies in Social Science and Humanities) are happy to be bringing you another exciting space seminar. Instead of our typical lunch seminar this one will be held at a special time, 1600-1700CET. On *Wednesday October 15th, 2025 @ 1600-1700* we welcome Dr Aaron Bateman of George Washington University to talk about weapons in space. Feel free to distribute to all your networks and anyone you feel would be interested. Abstract and Zoom link below:

Abstract:

The Strategic Defense Initiative is remembered as a controversial Reagan-era project to create a space-based missile defense program, but what were its far-reaching consequences for space security? How did this program bring us to where we are today--with growing counterspace capabilities and great power competition in outer space? And what does it say about the future of space security?

Bio:

Aaron Bateman is an assistant professor of history and international affairs at George Washington University. He studies how technology has shaped international politics since 1945. He is the author of Weapons in Space: Technology, Politics, and the Rise and Fall of the Strategic Defense Initiative (MIT Press, 2024). He is currently writing a book, provisionally entitled Wiring an Empire: Information Networks and the Rise of the United States as a Global Superpower. His peer-reviewed work has been published, or is forthcoming, in International Security, the Journal of Strategic Studies, International History Review, Diplomacy & Statecraft, Intelligence and National Security, and Science & Diplomacy (among others). His policy commentary has been published in Foreign Affairs, Engelsberg Ideas, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Physics Today, and War on the Rocks. He received his PhD in history of science from Johns Hopkins University. Prior to his doctoral studies, he served as a U.S. Air Force intelligence officer.
