Dear all,

See below the call for papers to the Human Choice and Computers Conference 2026.

You are especially welcome to submit papers to the track concerning AI through feminist readings.

IFIP WG9.8 Track – Gender, Diversity, and ICT
AI through feminist readings, see: https://ifiptc9.net/wg9-8-workshop/
Track chairs: Sisse Finken, Johanna Sefyrin, Marisa D’Mello

We invite papers that address problematizations of AI from a feminist perspective or related theoretical perspectives, exploring how multiple axes, such as race, gender, age, more-than-human entities, and non-human entities, intersect and influence our interaction with and impact of AI. Topics could, for instance, be related to AI and democracy, participatory efforts, algorithmic justice, bias and extractivism, imaginaries of AI, and the kinds of problems they are expected to “solve” as well as the futures they are imagined bringing about. We also encourage papers addressing topics related to sustainability issues in AI, such as decay and repair, GAI in teaching and higher education, work and AI, and the relationships between AI, humans, non-humans, and/or More-Than-Humans.

With this, submissions may address the following topics (the list is not exclusive):
  • AI and democracy
  • Participatory efforts and AI
  • Imaginaries of AI
  • AI, decay, and repair
  • AI and More-Than-Human relationships
Best regards,
Johanna

Ämne: HCC17: Call for Papers: Combined Intelligence: Human–AI Systems in Everyday Contexts (7-9 September 2026)

Dear TC9 Working Group chairs,

We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming conference,

HCC17 – Human Choice and Computers Conference

Combined Intelligence: Human–AI Systems in Everyday Contexts

taking place between 7th-9th September 2026

at TU Wien in Vienna, Austria

The HCC series of conferences is the official bi-annual event that brings together all the Working Groups and members of TC9.

Submissions due: January 30, 2026

The Human Choice and Computers (HCC) conference series began in 1974, emerging from concerns that people were being forced to use computers in dehumanizing ways. From the outset, the focus was on ensuring that human and community needs took precedence over purely technological or economic considerations. These early concerns remain highly relevant today, particularly with the rise of Artificial Intelligence.

Generative AI technologies, such as ChatGPT, have reignited debates around human–computer relationships. While some view them as profoundly disruptive to creativity and professional practices, others see them as inevitable innovations. AI introduces opportunities and risks: it can support decision-making but may also entrench bias and inequality. Ethical and societal questions have become central to the study of AI’s role in everyday life.

HCC17 in 2026 will focus on “Combined Intelligence: Human–AI Systems in Everyday Contexts.” Moving beyond abstract ethics, it emphasizes empirical, design, and critical research into how AI is integrated into daily practices—both at work and in education, healthcare, governance, and beyond. The conference highlights issues related to power, responsibility, and trust, aligning with IFIP TC9’s mission to examine human choice and social responsibility in computing.

HCC17 welcomes inputs from members of academia and research, civic society, computing associations, industry, and the IT professions on the following (and related) themes:

  • Trust and accountability: How users build confidence in AI systems they don’t fully understand, and who is responsible when decisions go wrong.
  • Power and participation: The politics of automation, delegation, and co-designing human–AI systems with diverse stakeholders.
  • Knowledge and learning: What is lost or gained when experiential knowledge is modeled by AI, and how humans and AI adapt together.
  • Ethics in practice: How values, fairness, and empathy are enacted and negotiated in everyday human–AI interactions.
  • Social impact and resistance: How AI reshapes institutional routines, affects vulnerable groups, and is appropriated, resisted, or subverted by communities.

HCC17 will also welcome co-located TC9 Working Group Workshops & Tracks, such as:

IFIP WG9.2 – Social Accountability and Computing (Track)

Human–AI Systems and the Public Interest: Accountability, Ethics, and Empowerment

Track chair: Neil Gordon

IFIP WG9.5 – Our Digital Lives (Workshop)

AI in our Digital Lives: Everyday Encounters with AI and Their Implications

Workshop chairs: Hameed Chughtai, Kathrin Bednar

IFIP WG9.8 – Gender, Diversity, and ICT (Track)

AI through feminist readings

Track chairs: Sisse Finken, Johanna Sefyrin, Marisa D’Mello
