Good afternoon all!

Apologies for cross posting!

We would like to invite you to our first Fall Term Higher Seminar at Tema-T Linköping University with Stine Adrian of UiT, Norway next week, Wednesday 5th November at 13-15 to 15.00 as usual.

Abstract, bio and Zoom link below:

Sperm stories. Boundaries of Ethics - donor sperm on the border

Since the 1990s, commercial sperm banks have emerged in Denmark, supplying donor sperm to a growing number of private fertility clinics both domestically and internationally. This transnational commercial trade in donor sperm has sparked recurring controversies, often framed as "ethical" issues in Denmark and abroad. Through multi-modal fieldwork conducted at Danish sperm banks and fertility clinics between 2001–2003 and 2011–2013, I became intrigued by the differing perceptions of ethical challenges surrounding sperm donation. These perceptions varied significantly between those directly involved in practice and the ethical debates unfolding in the media and parliamentary discussions.
In this presentation, I explore these differences and their implications for individuals engaged in sperm donation. Drawing on feminist and Science and Technology Studies (STS) scholars such as Donna Haraway, Karen Barad, and Jeannette Pols, I extend this analysis to propose a feminist reimagining of what a responsible ethics of donor sperm could look like in the future.

Bio: Stine Willum Adrian is a professor in sociology at UiT, Norway. Adrian holds a PhD in feminist-STS and cultural analysis. Adrian’s work is interdisciplinary, joining ethnography of medical technologies with cultural analysis. Her research interests lie in questions concerning, reproductive technology, technologies of death and dying, at the beginning of life, ethics of technologies, feminist theories and ethnographic methods.
