A fresh install of Structure 2.3.4 (using the GUI frontend) is giving me grief on a Windows 7 PC.  When I try to create a new project (starting the program from the Desktop shortcut), the program crashes when I attempt to load a location (i.e., a folder) for the new project, or load a data file.

If I try and let Windows assess compatibility, and start the program using the determined Windows version (XP service pack 2), I get an error message saying "Fali [sic] to start structure can't find class file."

If I open the program via the shortcut in the "All programs" menu listing, I get the message "Could not create the Java virtual machine."

I suspect this is all a Java problem, but has anyone had similar behavior and come up with a fix?

Full disclosure: I generally run Structure on our 88 core Linux high performance computer using structure_threader.  I am using the Windows installation only to create param files.  Still, it is annoying.

Thanks for any input.

Alan

Hi Allan,
I just wanted to point out that ever since version 1.2.0, Structure_threader has an option to generate "skeleton" mainparams and extraparams files for STRUCTURE.

Just run it like this:

structure_threader params -o "/path/to/dir/where/you/want/your/parameters"

Best,

Francisco

Thanks Francisco. I guess I was still in the mindset of when I was having
problems with theprogram and wrote to you directly (since the param mode
was crashing as well). I will certainly use S_t from now on for creating
skeleton param files.

But this problem is definitely something with Java.

Regards,
Alan
