how to connect role and rolemapping with ACL?

Because we are not using the role id and role map id in ACL . So what is the use of role and role mapping in ACL if we not using only in ACL. And How to use the principalType="ROLE" and "USER in ACL in application? how to use ROLE based user and their permission?
