Normally, I would be at the Lake Placid clave but Covid did us in. Instead locked up with my bride of 52 years at our summer camp on Lake Hortonia, Vermont. Going home tomorrow AM to tend my garden and mow lawns but thought it would be fun to take some crappie filets home to put in beer batter.

Went out yesterday and caught a crappie, sunfish, and a small bass. Pike took my only cone head woolly bugger. Did not have any other flies with me. An aside. Jerry Caruso used to come up and fish with me. He spent half his time changing flies, sizes, and colors. Just to be ornery, I would use the same fly all day long till I lost it. We both caught the same amount of fish. He loved to tie flies and enjoyed using them all.

Went back out today. Used a small white closure that I trimmed down to 2 inches. Has a blast. Kept 6 crappie from 9-12”. Also caught 2 largemouth bass. I think I have the crappie patterned. I found them all among root masses of lily pads. The pads are just starting to sprout but have not reached the surface.

Can hear those babies sizzling in the hot fat already.

Sounds like you are keying in on the fresh water fishing. In Maine I used a mickey fin for small mouth. Small bait fish patterns seemed to work the best.

Nice to hear your getting out, while we don't have memorial day here
this weekend it was still a public holiday and I managed to go fishing,
they lifted the long range and fishing travel ban a few weeks ago.

I managed a couple of trout (3) and a minnow, taken fairly in the mouth
on a size 10 mayfly). The days fishing was cut sort by a phone call from
my daughter to say that she and her brother werre going to visit.
