Geez-um. Put the kayak on the truck yesterday preparing for the upcoming trip. Turn the news on this AM to learn about a shark biting and flipping a kayak off Plymouth. Does not give me a warm and cuddly feeling although I know the probability of such an encounter is miniscule. Still….. Probably will try to stay away from concentrations of seals. Last year I paddled down to seen the new breach in south beach. On the way back I got in the middle of about 10 seals who seemed curious about me and kept surfacing 20 feet away. Did not like that. Damn seals have the whole ocean and they have to crowd me!
Been tying clousers, deceivers, and some bucktail streamers in small sizes. Wish I knew where I could find snapper blues with some regularity. Would love to target them with a 3 wt. I have fond memories of fishing for them in the Navesink river with small minnows and a cane pole. They were great poached with milk and onions.
Earlier this year I saw the Aleka rod (9’, 9 wt) on sale for about half the normal price. This US company had been marketing in Europe but wanted to expand into this country. Liked the fact the rod was in 4 pieces which made it nice for traveling. I gave the rod a good work out in Alaska and I was able to cast it further than my old Diamondback. Really liked the rod. Think it was the A4 model.
Really looking forward to the outing. See you on Tuesday.
Bill
