Dear Louisville Safe Street Advocates,

As Metro Government enters into its FY24-25 budget cycle, we at Streets for People wanted to reach out to you about our proposal for including $5 million for traffic calming in the upcoming city budget.

The central idea of our proposal is that everyone wants to feel safe on the streets where they live. But without funding or a clear process for how to make this happen, citizens are often left frustrated in their attempts to work with Metro to solve these issues in their neighborhood. (You can read our full proposal here.)

This winter, we have met with Mayor Craig Greenberg and Deputy Mayor of Public Works Nicole George, as well as a number of Council Members, to outline our proposal. Over the next month, the Mayor will be finalizing his proposed budget — before delivering his budget address to Metro Council in late April.

With that timeline in mind, we are asking the community of local advocates (ie, people like you!) to please write to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor to support S4P’s request that traffic calming funding be included in this year’s budget:
• $2.5m for Neighborhood Slow Streets
• $1.5m for Business District Beautifications
• $1m for Pathways to Parks

Click here to send an email in support of our traffic calming proposal. Feel free to tweak our template or add your own personal points of emphasis. (We encourage you to CC your Metro Council Member as well — you can find their email address here.)

In S4P’s work with neighborhoods across the city, we have felt the difficulty of implementing neighborhood-level traffic calming projects -- the ones that should be (or could be) "easy wins". We feel that funding these kinds of solutions is the first step toward addressing this issue. We appreciate your support in helping us empower neighborhoods citywide!

Thank you,

Chris Glasser
