options for select control

we are currently putting together a project for a client who had some
really good points about the select control.

in several cases, the control has a dozen or so entries with multiple
selection allowed.

the client is worried that alot of their users will not be versed in
using this control and will accidentally select a choice without
pressing ctl, thereby deselecting the current selections..

this could conceivably be done without their knowledge that it even
happened.

what i would like to consider is replacing the select multiple control
with something a little bit easier to read, such as drag and drop or a
series of checkboxes..

has anyone done such a replacement?

anyone have any other solutions?
