Hi, I'm wondering if I could get some clarification on one of the terms and conditions clauses please?

It's the Retention section, as below.  There are a couple of ways I can interpret the final sentence.  It is saying that my app or service is prohibited from storing any data obtained via the API at all, except for limited caching purposes?  Or perhaps that it's prohibited from storing any data obtained via the API if it's to be later displayed to or used by a third party other than the Strava user?

Hope that makes sense - our intention is to build an app which works to draw a subset of data from Strava and transform and store them in our own format.

Thanks
Kieren

(Relevant section of the Ts&Cs below)

Retention

Your application or service is encouraged to cache data to improve performance within the limits outlined in this Agreement. Strava is not liable in any way for any data you retain in your cache. No data shall remain in your cache longer than seven days. If your application or service checks for a resource (e.g., a segment) and that segment is no longer available from Strava, you shall remove it from your cache immediately regardless of how frequently you refresh your cache. Except for such limited caching, your application or service is prohibited from storing any data obtained via the API or providing or displaying such data or any associated service to any third party other than the Strava user using your application or service.

I just wanted to reply to this to bump it back up to the top, as I'd like to know the answer to this question.

Does this mean that we are not permitted to store data we retrieve from the API in our own database?

Many thanks,

Antony

I'd like a clarification here too. Moreover, item 2 / K / xi. / (iii) sounds way broader than intended, judging by the above "encouraged to cache data" and searching this forum for the keywords "cache api agreement":

"xi. You may not, and may not encourage or authorize others to: ... (iii) use or access the Strava API Materials to aggregate, cache, or store geographic location information or other user information accessible via the Strava API..."

That almost sounds like no caching is allowed, as it's not obvious to me what data wouldn't fall under the categories of geographic location information or other user information.
