Fellow Strand Brewers,
I could use your feedback on our next “Activities” project.
As part of our campaign to increase membership, I’m arranging for us to have an “Information Posse” (previously an “Information Booth) in the “Free Speech” area at the head of the Manhattan Beach Pier on Saturday, July 2.
We’re thinking about doing this from 10 AM to 2 PM.
If the weather cooperates, being in the midst of 4rth of July weekend crowds on the MB pier should be a blast.
I’ve contacted a whole bunch of Manhattan Beach city offices, and the bottom line is we don't need an official permit, but the police will not allow a “booth” or “table” (despite the fact student groups set them up regularly there).
However, as long as we are not obstructive we can stand around in our SBC T-Shirts, carry some signs, maybe wave our club banner and hand out flyers.
At last night’s club meeting, I presented a sample of the club flyer we’ve been using off and on for the past few years. It’s basically a single sheet, folded in half to make 4 pages.
I’ve attached a preliminary version of the flyer to this E-mail. If someone wants to design a better flyer, be my guest.
What is needed to pull this off is volunteers to sign up for two teams:
A) The Info Posse.
We need as many Strand Brewers as we can get to wear SBC shirts, maybe carry some signs, and hand out the flyers,
We’ll generally talk up the joys of homebrewing to whoever is interested, and maybe have an E-mail sign up sheet for more information.
If we have a sign saying something like “Learn How to Brew Your Own Beer at Home” I’ll bet we’ll attract some interest.
B) The Logistics Squad:
Since we know parking in that area is impossible, we’ll need someone to pick up our banner, signs and flyers from various homes and take them to the pier area to drop off by 10AM.
That way the rest of us can just bike down.
Then at 2 PM, we’ll need someone to drive by and pick all the stuff up again.
Let’s be really clear up front that in no way can beer be involved with this activity at any time. Not in a water bottle, not in a backpack. Trust me, the cops will be watching.
On the other hand, the great beach bar Shellback is just up the hill and Posse members can take as many refreshment breaks as they want.
I’m convinced our club can grow significantly if we just get the news out that we exist and that making beer at home is possible and fun.
So if you want to volunteer for the Info Posse or Logistics Squad, please E-mail me.
And if you have any ideas to enhance this project, I’m all ears.
For example, we can’t set up a table--but I don’t think there is any prohibition against wearing a sandwich board sign upon which we could display hops, barley, club activity photos, etc.
We just need someone willing to do it.
I look forward to your feedback and
PLEASE SIGN UP!
