toddler with esotropia

my son was 2.5 yrs old when his left eye started crossing inwards. he now has glasses and has to wear a patch 2 hours a day to try to strengthen the bad eye. the doctor has mentioned surgery to straighten the eye. i've heard talk of using a prism in glasses, but my doctor has not mentioned it whatsoever. his eye has gotten much worse in the 6 months since it started crossing and i am very worried he will lose sight in that eye all together. does anyone else who has had this have some information to share? i'm a little lost and feeling overwhelmed. thanks
