Is there something I can do to help along the promotion of the
mailing list?
Would you mind if I wrote to Carol, about putting her on this list,
for starters?
One nice things about mailing lists is that they're fairly "inward
pointing."
People write in a more relaxed and casual way, because they're not
writing
for "the public." It's usually back stage chatter.
And, there's far less need for moderation. People can just say
things, and
be satisfied that they've been said.
I think this would result in a lot less frustration for everybody.
Blogs are really set up for publishing. Think of the difference
between
writing a personal letter using a pen, 8.5" x 11" ruled paper,
envelope,
vs. writing in a newsroom at a copy desk with tools for layout,
and so on.
The controls in blogging software are for things like:
* previewing how it will look in the final page,
* subtly tweaking presentation,
* adjusting timestamps,
* categorizing messages,
* managing discussion on the posts,
* sidebar link management,
* moderation and tracking,
...and so on.
In a mailing list, things are a lot simpler. You just write what
you want to say, and hit send.
And everyone knows how to use their email software.
So; ... I think we could make things a lot simpler, by using
the mailing list as a "stage 1" / ground floor communications place,
and then from there, post creations to the creations blog, and
perhaps write summaries about what's going on in here on the
conversations blog, and so on.
I don't expect this decision to be accepted immediately, but
I believe it's something we should talk about. If there are needs
that need to be addressed that need answer, I'd really
like to understand them.
Thank you,
Lion
I'm wondering if a note about the mailing list might be added to the
welcome letter.
Coheartedly,
Tom

I like the idea of sending out renewed notice; We could post
a note on the Conversations blog, saying,...
"Hey, there's this unmoderated mailing list, ...
If you're comfortable with e-mail, feel free to participate;
It's public archive, so if you just want to read, you
can read it freely on the storyfield group page."
