Call for Founding Heads of R&D Labs

Dear Colleague,

I would like to draw your attention to the calls launched by the
Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence for Industry
https://ai4i.it/ inviting applications for Founding Heads of its
Research & Development Labs (deadline, October 15, 2025). The call
welcomes both early-career and established researchers working across
a broad spectrum of AI methodologies and application domains, across
Perceptive, Generative, Agentic, and Physical AI.

Further information and application details for the thematic calls are
available are available at
https://ai4i.it/open-call-for-head-of-rd-lab/

This general call is complemented by four thematic calls targeting
high-impact areas: Computer Vision, Generative AI for Manufacturing,
Agentic AI for Intelligent Decisions, AI for Cybersecurity. The
thematic calls are designed to attract candidates with domain-specific
expertise and a drive to shape foundational research with scientific,
technological and industrial relevance.

Full details and application links for thematic calls are available
at: https://ai4i.it/call-for-heads-of-four-thematic-rd-labs/

New Labs will shape the Institute’s core scientific structure,
alongside the first five R&D Labs, i.e. AI for Advanced Materials and
Engineering Design, AI Security, Efficient and Scalable AI, Safe and
Explainable Machine Learning for Smart Factories, and AI for
Multi-Agent Control Systems and the two joint labs established in
partnership with Leonardo Company, focusing on Next-Generation Pilot
Training for Multi-Domain Operations and AI for the Software
Development Life Cycle

Each Head of Lab will be awarded an internationally competitive salary
and will manage a starting grant comparable in scale to an ERC
Starting Grant. Researchers relocating to Italy benefit from
significant tax incentives, with up to 90% of their income exempt from
taxation.

Turin is a vibrant, internationally connected city with a growing
innovation economy and an outstanding quality of life. The Institute
facilitates integration through support for housing, international
schools, and family relocation services.

The new Labs will operate within a broader ecosystem that includes the
AI4I-CSP Institute for Advanced Study, funded by Compagnia di San
Paolo, which sustains a continuous flow of visiting scholars and
non-resident fellows to foster scientific collaboration.

Thanks to the long-standing support of Fondazione CRT, the Institute
is based at the OGR Tech Campus in Turin, a major European innovation
hub that hosts incubators, venture capital funds, and research labs,
and fosters strong links with international research and industrial
networks. https://ogrtorino.it/en/areas/ogr-tech

The Institute’s AI Foundry provides the full technological stack for
AI development—from early-stage model design to scale-up, deployment,
and industrial integration. It combines in-house engineering expertise
with dedicated, state-of-the-art computational resources, including 80
NVIDIA B200 GPUs, 68 H200 GPUs, and over 6 petabytes of high-speed
storage, delivering the power required to bring frontier AI systems
into real-world application.

Complementing the Foundry, the System for User Knowledge (SUK) is the
Institute’s core platform for scientific and technological sourcing,
matching, and delivery.

Designed as a dynamic marketplace for AI solutions, SUK actively
connects R&D Labs with industrial producers. Designed as a dynamic
marketplace for AI solutions, SUK actively connects R&D Labs with
industrial producers and end-users, enabling the co-design of
projects, accelerating access to competitive funding, and amplifying
the Labs’ capacity to scale scientific output into application.

The new Labs will operate within a broader ecosystem anchored by a
strategic partnership with the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT),
which provides administrative and operational support. The two
institutes are jointly developing a solid scientific collaboration in
areas such as robotics, advanced materials, and AI.

The Institute has defined strong academic partnerships with
Politecnico di Torino and the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca,
with a focus on PhD programs.

On the industrial and technological front, the Institute collaborates
closely with several industrial partners and benefits from privileged
access to high-performance computing capabilities and expertise
through CINECA, which is also the key leading actor within the Italian
AI Factory.

Together with Marco Pavone, who’s the Chairman of our Scientific
Advisory Board, we would be grateful if you could help circulate this
call across your network. I would be glad to answer any question you
may have about the Institute and its organization, and I am personally
available to connect with interested candidates.

With my kindest regards, Fabio
