Subject: Rain barrel routing questions

Hi everyone - Hopefully someone can clarify a couple of points concerning
rain barrel LID routing for me. I am wondering 1) where does SWMM route the
runoff bypass from the rain barrel once the barrel capacity has been met?
And 2) does the "send to pervious area" checkbox route only LID captured
volume or does it route all volume routed to the rain barrel to the
pervious area - including the bypass?

Thank you!
Shannon

Subject: Importing shapefile subcatch areas into SWMM

Hi,

Is there a way to automatically import subcatch areas into SWMM? I have a large number of vector based shapefiles that I would like to utilize as subcatch areas. If importing the shapefiles directly doesn't work, is there a way to automatically just import a text list of areas with the corresponding subcatch parameters into subcatch areas.

Thanks,

Both the rain barrel overflow and the its drain line flow are combined
together before routing to the subcatchment's outlet. If the "send to
pervious"option is used then, again, the combined overflow and
underdrain flow from the unit are sent to the subcatchment's pervious
area (not to the outlet).

Allowing the underdrain to have a different outlet destination is on the
"to do" list for a future update.

Try using the BASINS system to build an initial version of your model
(http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/basins/). It allows you to import the
boundaries of your subcatchments from shape files. The biggest challenge
(for me anyway) is panning/zooming the BASINS map to where your study
site is. There is menu item named "Tiles" that can be used to bring up a
backdrop street map that should help. Once you've set the boundaries of
your site select the File | Open command to load in your shape files and
then the Models | SWMM command to build your SWMM model from them.

Thank you for the reply. One more quick question, when you say the drain
line flow and the overflow are combined together before routing to the
subcatchment outlet (or pervious area), does that mean the overflow routing
to the outlet (or pervious area) is delayed according to the delay time
specified for the rain barrel?

Cheers,
Shannon

Jessica,

I would suggest creating a quick dummy model, draw 1 or 2 subcatchments,
save, exit and examine the input file for the model. There will be a
section called POLYGONS where the coordinates of the subcatchments you
drew will be shown. Assuming you can easily export coordinates for your
shapes you should be able to reformat the data to meet the swmm input
file requirements. You can add the information for the other data
sections as well if you desire.
