In the 3rd-person thread I posted a link to a book editor's blog that talked about the subject. It happenened to be Part III of a 3-part blog discussing POV. Now that I'm more awake, I started reading at the beginning, that is, Part I. I was impressed with what I read yesterday, even if I was sleepy, and I'm impressed with the opening of Part I. For example, this is what he says early on:

"I have to state for the record that, as a rule, I don’t like ‘rules.’ I believe there are general guidelines, accepted standards and writing techniques that are common in writing. They are common because they’ve proved over time to make for better, clearer writing, keep readers interested and entertained, and readers are familiar and comfortable with these techniques.

"But writing is part craft, part art. Art is often about stretching boundaries, redefining standards, breaking ‘rules’ or writing new ones. The answer to your POV question is 'it depends.' It depends on the story, the genre, the writer’s style, and how deftly a talented writer can pull it off."

You gotta love that.

The following are some of the questions he received that led him to write this blog:

"- Should I select a POV and stick with it throughout an entire novel? Or can POV change from one chapter to the next?"

"- I constantly see examples of successful authors changing POV, sometimes frequently and within chapters. Is there a definitive rule or a set of general guidelines on changing POV?"

"- How does one handle a situation where information needs to be conveyed that the first-person narrator can’t possibly know?"

"- Which POV is best?"

"- What is head-hopping and why is it a bad thing?"

It kinda sounds like the stuff we've been asking, eh? Can't wait to read what he says about the 3rd one.

Anyway, I haven't read the blog. I read about half of Part III and the beginning of Part I, but what I read I liked so I'm passing along the link to those interested. I would think it would also generate a lot of good discussion in this group on the topic of POV.

SB,

Hmm... a freelance editor who seems to know what he's about. And
Erotica is one of his preferences. That's like finding the proverbial
needle on the internet. I certainly can't argue with his general
philosophy on writing.

This is a very good article and I like how he keeps the discussion
simple. (I"m Bing and I approve of the article... Yeah I know it
means nothing but still ^_^)

But frankly, Mr. Blayde, I suspect it’ll enlighten you more than what
you’ve already known, cuz you've been researching this topic for quite
some time. What is happening to your plane crash surviving pilot? Has
he become a werewolf yet?

No werewolf. I wrote 2 chapters (and that's two chapters with no sex; my fans are gonna hate me). The characters just found the shack, but I have to alter that based on the comments. I need the shack to already be built and for them to find things like shovels and stuff to survive since it wasn't a shipwreck and I don't have floating FedEx packages to use. The hanging skeleton was to show the man's despair from being all alone (he buried all the others) and was a cliffhanger at the end of Chapter 2.

But I've been spending my time writing a short story for a magazine contest so I put that other story aside.

In my WIP, close to 150k words have lapsed since the last sex scene.
You wanna talk about hatred?????

Good luck with the contest.

I don't know what's wrong, I write whole stories without ANY sex
scenes, and get no hate mail about it.

But I write erotica. The story will have plenty of sex, but it's taking a while to get there.

Sorry Switch,

But I write both straight stories and erotica - I put the story in
whichever category that best suits it. Some are better with sex as
part of the plot, some aren't.

Ernest,

That's my point. I write erotica for SOL stories so that's what people who follow me expect. That's all I meant.
