I'm laughing all the way to the bank. This codex is one of the best things to ever be written for Warhammer 40'000, and one of the most Dwarven tomes I've ever had the pleasure to read. And it's in space!
The timeline is the biggest missed opportunity caused by the new codex design. Since the Leagues of Votann are supposed to have been around since the Dark Age of Technology, you'd figure that they would have a significant history, but because there is no timeline you only really get hints and tidbits to this. One especially important thing I must note is that what the Leagues did during the Age of Strife is never mentioned. Now oldschool Squat lore actually went into significant detail about what the Age of Strife was like for the Squats, because a significant part of their lore is that they weathered it far better than most human-descended civillizations. This is why they retain so much Dark Age tech they actually understood instead of descending into ignorance like mostly everyone else. I can only presume there's a similar story for the Leagues of Votann, but the Age of Strife isn't delved into.
They could probably be removed and put into a new body if need be. The codex mentions that an Ironkin can survive in suspended animation if their body is destroyed, so they must have the ability to go into a new one after that.
Just read the codex (not going to be playing Votann anytime soon, if ever). Interesting read- I think GW did as good of a job bringing the Squats back and making them more than just "dwarves in space". Overall, it was a better section of lore and fluff than I had hoped, with some good twists and explanations. Looking forward to the first BL novel involving the Kin.
Kelborn's post was based on looking at the galactic map, which presents the Great Rift as a single anomaly blanketing the entire galactic core. This is not the case, based on maps included in the Leagues of Votann codex.
There is a story in the codex about a Votann whose planet was consumed by Tyranids. The Tyranids just left the Votann sitting there completely untouched. The Votann subsequently went insane due to the Leagues feeding their dead into it during the invasion to protect them from the Tyranids.
As soon as early copies of the Leagues of Votann codex were out in the wild, it was obvious that it had powerful synergies. Prominent community websites, podcasts, and YouTube shows have rounded up the strengths of the Votann.
The fact remains that the Leagues of Votann codex was over-tuned and the models under-costed. Letting them out into the wild in that form would result in a monotonous tournament environment and a spate of extremely un-fun games for any casual players luckless enough to run into them.
Void Armour is another unique Votann rule which applies to every unit in the codex, including the vehicles, which both prevents enemy units from re-rolling any wound rolls or damage rolls against your units and reduces the AP of any incoming attacks by 1! This makes both Votann infantry and tanks super resilient. In one League you can further improve the resilience of your units by increasing their Toughness by 1. Toughness 9 Hekaton Land Fortresses which reduce AP of incoming attacks and prevent the enemy rerolling wound rolls will be a very tricky unit for opponents to deal with.
Time for another leak and rumor compilation, this time we have Warhammer 40k Leagues of Votann 9th edition codex, rumors, leaks, previews. Compilation will feature both Games Workshop community info and any Internet leaks and rumors as they come!
The League of Votann army set is not a particularly deep box, but it is well filled, and the presentation is really something special thanks to the slip cover. Besides the codex, tokens and datacards, 25 new miniatures are included: 1 Kâhl (which can also be assembled as special character Ûthar the Destined), 1 Einhyr Champion, 2x 10 Hearthkyn Warriors, and 3 Hernkyn Pioneers.
There are also a lot of choices when it comes to armament. All 10 models can be equipped with either an auto-pattern bolter or ion blaster, or with a bolt pistol and melee weapon. Strangely enough, the latter is not an option in the codex.
In addition, one model can receive a HYLas auto rifle, another a L7 missile launcher, another an EtaCarn plasma beamer, another a magna-rail rifle. For every 10 models, you can choose two of these special weapon options in the codex. Three more models can receive a medipack, a multiwave comms array, and a pan spectral scanner. In addition, there is an optional arm that throws a grenade, as well as various pouches and equipment pieces that you can freely attach to the miniatures. Wow, what a kit!
The League of Votann Codex is a rather thin codex with just over 100 pages. However, with 30 pages of lore, the background of the Kin is well illuminated (there is even a nod to the Demiurg). There are 12 pages of miniature showcases, which, however, do not show any other models that have not yet been introduced.
The rules section contains everything you would find in a 9th edition codex: Battle-forged rules with detachment abilities, sub-faction rules for the individual leagues, stratagems, army rules, matched play rules incl. secondary objectives, crusade rules, and of course the datasheets and points.
As we do not yet know individual prices, it is difficult to determine the exact value of the products included. But with the previous army sets, the saving was usually around 25% compared to buying them individually (plus whatever the special edition codex is worth to you), and with the League of Votann, the value seems to be similar.
With the Leagues of Votann, we experience the historic moment of a completely new Warhammer 40.000 faction. The Kin are familiar, yet very different from the Squats we knew. The kits are fantastic and detailed, the codex a little thin but has plenty of lore, and the value for money of the box is alright. We are very excited to see what the community does with the Kin, and Garfy in particular is looking forward to painting the new models and sharing them here on Tale of Painters.
