A public server at nethack.alt.org, commonly known as "NAO", gives players access to NetHack through a Telnet or SSH interface. A browser-based client is also available on the same site. Ebonhack connects to NAO with a graphical tiles-based interface.[43]
During the whole month of November, the annual /dev/null NetHack Tournament took place every year from 1999 to 2016.[44][45] The November NetHack Tournament, initially conceived as a one-time tribute to devnull, has taken place each year since 2018.[45] The Junethack Cross-Variant Summer Tournament has taken place annually since 2011.[46]
To playNetHack on this server, justtelnet alt.org (on normal port 23 or port 14321) or ssh net...@alt.org.Consider putty on Windows.
So I just downloaded nethack v366 (I know it's not the latest version but I always get a "this site cant be reached" message when I try the newest version) and everything seems to work fine apart from the lack of a corridor graphic. I don't really know what's making this happen. btw I'm using Windows 11, idk if that has anything to do with it.
I am struggling to find info online about how to enable the curses interface via PuTTy connecting to nethack.alt.org via SSH. I am using Windows 10 and using the latest Nethack v3.6.6. I have edited my virus file to look like below, removing the "#" from the OPTIONS=windowtype:curses. Upon saving with ":w + [ENTER]" and then quitting ":q" and then loading up nethack, things look corrupted? I also tried resetting my virus file with "C" and then re-enabling curses again. Still getting this corrupted look. Any tips?
Indeed, if you ever feel like quitting playing when you've died once or twice too often, try explore mode. You can freely experiment on various things (especially if you start game with 'nethack -X', when you will get a wand of wishing), without the fear of the error part of trial and error leading to an early doom.
Using the command "nethack -u wizard -D" ("nethack -uwizard -D" in Unix systems, however, only certain users are allowed to do that) to start the game, you will get wizard mode. It's like explore, but you get unlimited wishes, teleport, magic mapping, identify, create monster and other goodies. It is a good way to experiment with things.
Maybe the single best source for information is the newsgroup, rec.games.roguelike.nethack. There you can find lots of experienced players and source divers, who can tell you anything you want to know about the game. However, before asking questions there, check the guidebook. If your question is answered there, you won't make people angry. NetHackers are usually quite a jolly bunch, but it's annoying to answer the same questions again and again.
I'm looking to make a console game which would constantly need to output frames of ASCII graphics, but I'm wondering how to make the function much smoother. While I don't believe the nethack-console game isn't written in Python, I'm looking at how well it can display 'animated' frames which don't seem to move around, and not clearly showing that the graphics were 'reprinted', in turn making the graphics very consistent, and any animation that happens 'seems to be done on a single print-out'. If the description isn't clear enough, let me use examples:
The programmer is drawn to NetHack as an extension of the operating system. Its culture is deeply intertwined with that of the Unix systems, and indeed is a staple fixture on any good Unix system - a known quantity, ageless, familiar, and soothing; whatever hairy command-line tasks are required, nethack(6) is always there.
The title is properly spelled "NetHack", with two capital letters. "nethack" is also correct when used to refer to the name of the game binary. "Nethack" is a common misspelling, even having been used by members of the DevTeam in comments in the source code. See also Spelling.

Changes the kind of error messages used by screen. When you arefamiliar with the game nethack, you may enjoy the nethack-stylemessages which will often blur the facts a little, but are much funnierto read. Anyway, standard messages often tend to be unclear as well.
This option is only available if screen was compiled with theNETHACK flag defined (see Installation). The default setting is thendetermined by the presence of the environment variable$NETHACKOPTIONS and the file /.nethackrc - if either one ispresent, the default is on.
The Koga loves this game, for ascii technology it's stupendous. Then again The Koga always liked dungeon crawler "rpgs" over long drawn out Final Fantasy and crap. The Koga considerd converting D&D into a tabletop nethack, for starts every class would need use magick device as a class skill. But The Koga figures he'd see who here likes it, cause none of his pals have heard of it, and Shanna downloaded it and said "this is completely random and irritating". Which might be why The Koga likes it so. : P
One of the nice things about being curses-based is that you can run on any terminal, even over a telnet connection. There are many nethack servers, where you can play games over telnet and even meet other people's ghosts. There's even a yearly Nethack tournament.
Les errades, els missatges divertits, les històries, les experiències i les idees per a la propera versió es discuteixen al grup de notícies d'Usenet, rec.games.roguelike.nethack(anglès), comunament conegut com a "RGRN".
