Lloyd Hopkins is the Executive Director and Founder of Million Dollar Teacher Project, an organization aimed at increasing support for teachers inside and outside of the classroom, raising the profile of highly effective teachers and drastically improving teacher compensation to bring the teaching profession to the prestigious level it deserves so ALL students are able to receive excellent instruction every day. Lloyd has worked in and around the education system in varied capacities. He has worked with youth offenders, dropout prevention and ran after-school recreation programs. But, it was his time spent as a Teaching Assistant in the Alhambra School District that impacted him the most. The combination of these experiences led to the creation of MDTP because he recognized that if we truly want to help students reach their full potential we must have amazing educators in every classroom.
As educators, teachers are constantly looking to continually grow in their profession to not only learn how to better connect with their students, but to also make the learning experience much more exciting.
One of my favorite outcomes of this project, however, was how I was able to show a side of teachers that we almost never get to see, the side that is authentic, vulnerable, and human. This is a rare experience for the average teacher, who often feels as if they have to put on some kind of artificial front or pretend that they do not have the same thoughts, feelings, desires, and hopes as anyone else.
Teachers have more nuances and are more complex than the professional, straightforward personas we tend to project in the classroom, and it was exciting to showcase that. I was able to capture photographs of our staff being thoughtful, playful, serious, joyous, pensive, proud, confident, and exhibiting a host of other expressions and emotions that display them as the actual human beings that they are.
Check out a similar photography project that was eventually published in book format. The photographer asked subjects to tell two personal stories of how they felt they were perceived, and wove the series together around the theme of Perception.
The Teacher Pipeline Project provides dual enrollment opportunities in education courses and full scholarships for aspiring teachers, with new teacher coaching, through a partnership between American University, the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), Friendship Charter Schools, and the Office of the State Superintendent in Education (OSSE). Designed to increase the number of DC teachers from the District, it aims to diversify the teacher workforce and increase teacher retention. Teaching Fellows can aspire to be general elementary or secondary teachers and/or special education teachers.
The first phase of the Teacher Pipeline Project is the Dual Enrollment Program, which includes the opportunity for DC high school seniors to enroll in six college credits (e.g., two courses), free of charge. Students will attend on-campus courses alongside current AU students. Between 10-20 high school students are selected each year to participate in the dual enrollment experience. The courses include the following:
The third phase of the project includes the 5 year commitment to coaching of AU Teaching Fellows during their first years of teaching in DCPS. Research indicates that strong coaching protocols for new teachers improves retention.

For too long, the aim of school was to get all of the correct answers. Instead, we should focus on asking thoughtful questions. Curiosity is a habit that can be learned. Lead learning using strategies like these is the way I know to teach it.

As a result, students develop deep content knowledge as well as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication skills. Project Based Learning unleashes a contagious, creative energy among students and teachers.
PBL is becoming widely used in schools and other educational settings, with different varieties being practiced. However, there are key characteristics that differentiate "doing a project" from engaging in rigorous Project Based Learning.
We find it helpful to distinguish a "dessert project" - a short, intellectually-light project served up after the teacher covers the content of a unit in the usual way - from a "main course" project, in which the project is the unit. In Project Based Learning, the project is the vehicle for teaching the important knowledge and skills student need to learn. The project contains and frames curriculum and instruction.
In contrast to dessert projects, PBL requires critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and various forms of communication. To answer a driving question and create high-quality work, students need to do much more than remember information. They need to use higher-order thinking skills and learn to work as a team.
PBLWorks offers a variety of workshops, courses and services for teachers, school and district leaders, and instructional coaches to get started and advance their practice with Project Based Learning.
