Include male child victims of sexual abuse in victim compensation scheme Maneka Gandhi to states

The Minister also highlighted that the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act is gender neutral and safeguards the interest of not only the girl child but also the male child. NEW DELHI Union Minister Maneka Gandhi has asked states and Union Territories (UTs) to issue necessary directions to departments concerned to take steps to include male child victims of sexual abuse in the Victim Compensation Scheme. In a letter to chief ministers, the Union Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister also said compensation, including interim compensation, should be given to the victim on time.

Seven women among 8 held for sexual abuse of girls

PATNA The Muzaffarpur police on Sunday arrested eight persons, including Brajesh Kumar, head of an NGO running a government-owned children’s home for girls for alleged sexual exploitation of the inmates. The arrested persons, including seven women, were later sent to jail. Muzaffarpur SSP Harpreet Kaur said statements of 30 girls of the children’s home had been recorded. An FIR had been lodged against the NGO with the Women’s police station in Muzaffarpur on May 31 after the matter came to light through an audit report of the Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). The children’s home, located on Sahu Road, was run by the Seva Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti with which the state government had entered into a contract for running the home for girls rescued from traffickers.

19 rescued from human trafficking in Koraput

Six women and 13 minor girls were rescued by the police from a bus in Koraput district of Odisha on Wednesday night while they were being illegally trafficked to Andhra Pradesh. A couple allegedly involved in the illegal transportation was also taken into custody. According to the District Child Protection Officer of Koraput, Rajashree Das, 13 of the 19 rescued were minors. All of them were from different parts of Nabarangpur district. They had been promised jobs with hefty wages, she added.

Six-year-old killed after sexual abuse in Haryana

YAMUNANAGAR A 6-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted and then killed in Yamunanagar district of Haryana on Sunday. The incident took place near former minister and Congress leader Nirmal Singhs farmhouse in Khizrabad area of the district. The victim was the daughter of a watchman at Singhs farmhouse.

Maharashtra trafficking case 16 held for flesh trade

Sixteen months after 68 women were rescued at Nandurbar, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Maharashtra director general of police Satish Mathur has arrested 16 middlemen and women who allegedly lured the parents of the women with money and then sold them to brothels in Nandurbar. The 16 accused were arrested at different instances throughout the month of May. They hail from Maharashtra, Bihar, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Odisha. On January 10, 2017, 68 women were rescued in a joint raid carried out by Rescue Foundation and Shahada police, after which the police had arrested two brothel owners in Nandurbar.

Child abuse cases on the rise in city

16 cases reported in 3 months; probe on into abuse of Kakkanad school student Last week, the Kochi city police launched a probe into the alleged abuse of a minor girl by several prominent personalities. The girl is a student of a school at Kakkanad. The case followed a direction to this effect by the High Court while considering a habeas corpus petition filed by the victim’s father which also alleged that his wife and three daughters were illegally detained at a retreat centre at Madukkarai in Coimbatore. A case under sections 7 and 8 of the POCSO Act was registered based on the statements of the three children, aged 15, 12, and 6.

NCPCR rubbishes charges of child labour in granite quarries as reported by international NGO

NEW DELHI The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has rubbished the report of an international NGO that had “highlighted” widespread involvement of child labourers in granite quarries in southern states and discouraged multi-national companies to source granite from India. A fact finding team of the NCPCR, along with UNICEF executives had visited Prakasam and Karimnagar districts in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Salem and Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu and Ramnagar district in Karnataka over five months to carry out the investigations.
