Two ashram staffers held for sexually harassing three boys

The Kalamboli police have arrested two caretakers of an ashram for sexually abusing three inmates, who are stepbrothers, over a period of two months. The accused, Dipesh Nikam (19) and Gaurav Kamat (27), are caretakers of the ashram in Sector 14, Kalamboli. The case was registered on Monday night by the father of the three boys, who are 11, 12 and 17 years old. The boys are Class V, VI and IX students, and the eldest has an intellectual disability. “According to the complaint, the boys were sexually abused by three caretakers from February to April. We have arrested two of them. The boys said they were abused at night in the caretakers’ rooms,” Assistant Commissioner of Police, Panvel division, Prakash Nilewad said. Sub-inspector Santosh Pimpale and team nabbed the two accused from Kalamboli.

Nine held in Bihar shelter home sexual abuse case

Even as police have arrested nine people in the Muzaffarpur shelter home sexual abuse case, including the owner of a Hindi daily in north Bihar, Opposition RJD on Wednesday took potshots at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, asking how the newspaper has been getting government advertisements even though the Chief Minister “often talks about moral propriety”. The arrests came after the state government’s Social Welfare Department filed a case against the management of Seva Sankalp Evam VikasSamiti, the NGO which ran the shelter home. Forty-four minor girls who lived in the home were moved to other shelter homes a fortnight ago after a social audit by a team from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) reported complaints of sexual abuse of minors.

Ruling on trafficked children reserved for June 18

A city court posted to June 18 its ruling on petitions filed by caregivers seeking custody of the trafficked children. Eight caregivers of the trafficked children, who had been put up in childcare homes after the police busted a racket involving sale of newborns, had filed petitions in the court of the Principal Chief Judicial Magistrate, Senior Division, Mysuru, seeking custody of the children. After hearing counsels of the petitioners, judge Subramanya heard counsel for the Department of Women and Child Welfare and Mysuru District Child Protection Officer on Tuesday. “We have opposed the plea for handing over custody of the trafficked children to the caregivers, who purchased the children illegally,” Kumaraswamy, the in-charge Mysuru district child protection officer, said. Out of the eight petitions filed by caregivers seeking custody of the children, the court has given interim custody of three trafficked children to their respective caregivers.

Three trafficked children reunited with caregivers

In 2016, the police busted a racket of sale of newborns at a private maternity home in Mysuru; 16 children were separated from caregivers After almost a two-year-long struggle, the caregivers of three trafficked children were reunited with them following an order issued by a city court. It was in September 2016 that the Mysuru district police busted a racket involving sale of newborns at a private maternity home in Mysuru and separated a total of sixteen children from their caregivers in different parts of Karnataka and Kerala. In a ruling, welcomed as “path-breaking” by a section child rights’ activists, the Principal Senior Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Mysuru recently handed over to the caregivers the interim custody of three out of the sixteen trafficked children, who had been put up in different child care homes in Mysuru and the neighbouring Mandya district.

Sex abuse case filed against KAU college librarian

THRISSUR Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has handed over a sexual harassment complaint- filed by a woman against the librarian of the college of cooperation, banking and management-to Mannuthy police. KAU officials said the complainant was a last-grade daily-wage employee who alleged that the librarian had tried to sexually harass her at the library. The employee submitted a written complaint on Monday and within minutes the internal complaints committee (ICC) met and collected evidence. There are reports the she had mentioned the incident a couple of days ago to college authorities orally, but she put it in writing only on Monday.

5-year boy sexually assaulted in Ballia

VARANASI A five-year-old boy was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man at a village under the Dokati police station area of Ballia district on Thursday. The boy was admitted to the district hospital. The police lodged an FIR under section 377 (unnatural offences) of IPC and POCSO Act against the accused, who is absconding. According to reports, the boy was lured by one Vishal Yadav, who allegedly sexually assaulted him at a secluded place and fled from the spot. Vishal, a resident of Bairia, had gone to his relatives’ place in Dokati area.
