Dear All,

In case you missed it, please find the recording of Yiŋiya Mark Guyula’s talk from last week about the NT child protection bill, Yolŋu Rom Ŋurrungu, Self Determination and Fracking in the Northern Territory at https://reconciliation4westernsydney.org/virtual-building-bridges-2021/#session_4

Yiŋiya said that the NT child protection bill would come in this past week without consultations with Yolŋu Leaders/Elders. He is concerned about child removals in the NT and is asking what the Government is doing to recognise and work with Yolŋu authorities as they are once again ignored by this round of legislative changes.

The Territory Families Legislation Amendment Bill 2021 is a ‘Bill for an Act to amend the Care and Protection of Children Act 2007 and the Youth Justice Act 2005 and for related purposes’. It was introduced on 27 Oct 21 and passed last Tuesday, 30 Nov.

The Amendment to include ‘A Senior Aboriginal Authority as a Information Sharing Authority for child protection’ was voted down by the Labor Government. Yingiya said, “By including a senior Aboriginal authority on the information sharing authority list it acknowledges the cultural authority from which the child belongs. It brings cultural safety and it allows Yolngu and balanda to work together in partnership for the protection of children. ...” He posted further information on his facebook on 2 Dec at https://www.facebook.com/mlayingiya.guyula.1 and commented “They just want to strip us off our authority, language, culture, identity and country!!”
