Protect Heritage, Protect the Martuwarra! 🧡 Incredible turn out yesterday to support Traditional Owners marching from Kings Park to Parliament House, urging the Mark McGowan Government to protect the Martuwarra Fitzroy River and Aboriginal Heritage ✨
The powerful words of Traditional Owners not to let the Martuwarra become the next Juukan Gorge echoed from the steps of Parliament.
Traditional Owners have never consented to extracting water from the river and are fighting to stop the destruction of yet another sacred Aboriginal site.
PLEASE take action NOW and send a message to the government to protect the Martuwarra 🐟

BORROLOOLA FRACKING

“Traditional Owners of the Gundanji and Garawa nation do not consent to fracking in the Beetaloo basin, but the government has put $50 million towards doing it anyway,” said DjabWurrung, Gunnai and Gunditjmara woman Lidia Thorpe, the Greens Senator for Victoria. ...

Senator McCarthy, a Yanyuwa woman and declared traditional owner from near Boroloola, said she was concerned public funding was being given "when parts of the grants process remain questionable and not transparent." The $50 million grants program, announced in December 2020, aims to expedite gas exploration in the Northern Territory's Beetaloo Basin.

Two major parties voted to give our money, public money, to corporations to drill for coal seam gas in the Northern Territory, to open up a gigantic new territory, the Beetaloo Basin, for fracking.

Subject: Morrison just got his $50m for gas

BREAKING: Late yesterday afternoon, a vote to stop the Morrison Government granting $50 million in public money to oil and gas corporations to frack the Beetaloo and McArthur Basins failed – opening up the largest new fossil fuel basins in the country against the consent of Traditional Owners.1 But we have a plan.

With the Labor Party siding with the Morrison Government on today's crucial vote, it's clear we can't trust the major parties to stop funnelling public money into climate wrecking fossil fuel projects. But Sabine, we know there's more than one way to win this fight.

Government handouts make up only a fraction of the funds oil and gas corporations like Origin Energy need to frack the NT. The rest is up to big investors.

That's why we're setting our sights on Origin's big investors in the lead up to their next AGM by talking directly to their customers, showing millions of people exactly how Origin is trampling the wishes of Traditional Owners to open up a dangerous fossil fuel bomb.

Our plan is ambitious: expert legal advice to work with shareholders who want to hold Origin to account, a massive advertising campaign directly targeting Origin's customers, and flights and accommodation to make sure Traditional Owners can meet with key investors.

But the AGM is only weeks away, so we need to get started right now. And of course the best legal advice and advertising space isn't cheap – that's why we need your help.

Can you chip in $12 to support Traditional Owners to send shockwaves through Origin's upcoming AGM, and show big investors that there's no business in destroying country with fracking?

CHIP IN $12 ❯

Now is the time to show investors that Traditional Owners, backed by our one million member strong movement, are fighting back against corporations hellbent on destroying country, ripping through cultural heritage, poisoning precious water and kissing our chances of a safe climate future goodbye. And Sabine, it starts here and now with Origin Energy customers and shareholders.

Investors are dialing up their scrutiny of oil and gas corporations consent and climate credentials when deciding who to invest their money in.2 It's why the big players like Origin have spent a fortune trying to build a clean, green image, and are adamant on keeping investors in the dark about their fracking gasfield plans.

But if our movement does what it does best – leveraging people power to open doors to decision makers, whether they're MPs or investors – we'll continue to hold up the megaphone for communities on the frontlines. We can cut through Origin's spin, and send a clear message that backing fracking is a losing bet.

With your help we can:
  • Fund expert legal advice to work with Origin shareholders at the AGM. We've identified Origin shareholders who are ready to stand in solidarity with Traditional Owners at Origin's AGM. It's a big statement to investors if even Origin's own shareholders are raising the alarm, so we need experts to navigate the complexities of corporate governance to ensure they can get it right.

  • Run a massive targeted advertising and education campaign to Origin customers across the country. We'll bring the real story of what Origin is proposing right into the homes of their customers and make a powerful call for them to step up and take action against these reckless plans to throw away the futures of so many.

  • Cover flights, accommodation and support for Traditional Owners across communities in the NT to meet with investors before Origin's AGM. Even if we're still in lockdown, supporting these communities to have access to a working wifi connection won't come cheap – but nothing is more powerful than uplifting the voices of First Nations communities with connections and birthrights to country. So we must make sure investors hear from them directly.
Harnessing the trifecta of Traditional Owners, Origin shareholders and customers will send a message that even the steeliest investors can't ignore. But to pull this all together, we need your support.

Chip in $12 to bring Traditional Owners, shareholders and customers together in the fight to prevent irreversible damage from fracking gasfields.

Origin Energy's fracking gasfield plans are huge – they start in the Northern Territory and will span across three more states – steamrolling communities who oppose it and spelling disaster for our climate.

It's why in just the past few months, Traditional Owners travelled thousands of kilometres to Parliament House, wrote powerful stories for the media, and gave unwavering evidence at Senate hearings.3,4

Traditional Owners and our movement won't stop fighting to protect country just because our parliamentarians have no spine. If politicians won't listen, we'll work together with Traditional Owners to make sure investors – with their reputations squarely on the line – will.

Can you chip in $12 to support Traditional Owners against corporations trying to force fracking on their communities? Let's take this fight straight to investors!

Our movement has never rested on politicians to do the right thing. We back First Nations communities on the frontlines, and people power, to fight and win the change we need.

In determination,

All First Nations work at GetUp is led by a team of campaigners from the Widjabul Wia-bul, Garrwa, Gooreng Gooreng, Wiradjuri and Noongar nations.

PS – We know our movement can do this. Just last week, GetUp members like you hung up 26,000 posters across every corner of the continent in support of Traditional Owners. It's time to channel that power into Origin like never before - chip in $12 now!
