Dear All,

Please join STICS’ online forum on Wednesday, 6 April at 7pm AEST to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

In light of this being supposedly the last year of the Intervention and the current election campaign it's frustrating there's hardly any mention of the Intervention/SF any more. And in light of decades of housing neglect and overcrowding putting First Nations people’s health even more at risk with the spread of Covid, this online panel discussion is not to be missed.

One of our speakers, Greg Marks will document the failure of housing policy during the Intervention, including the defunding of remote communities and its consequences for the health and dignity of First Nations People afffected.

Yingiya Guyula Mla stated in the NT Parliament yesterday: ...People in communities were not well-equipped and over-crowding is a big issue. The pandemic came through in my electorate where we had families up to 18 people living in one three-bedroom house. In one there were 5 families; 6 adults and 8 young people. That was really bad. Within that overcrowded house we had to do an isolation for half of the family. This was very awkward and I can say that because I was there. ...

Dr Simon Quilty, who has worked in medicine in the NT for over 20 years was quoted in a recent brilliant article: “the consequences of overcrowding on health are really quite profound”. “When people live in very close proximity in very warm houses that disconnect from electricity all of the time and often have serious problems with plumbing … then it is the ideal environment for the spread of infectious diseases,” see more at 'We can't stay like this': In remote Australia, a forgotten housing crisis drags on?
