Hi Sabine

On 9 November 2019, Warlpiri teenager Kumanjayi Walker was shot three times by police officer Zachary Rolfe. He was taken into police custody, where he died from his injuries. When the not guilty verdict in the Zachary Rolfe trial was handed down earlier this year, it broke the hearts of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People across the country. In the face of this devastating loss, the Yuendumu community have remained relentless in their calls for justice.

Now, Yuendumu Elders are calling for karrinjarla muwajarri on a national day of action on 18 June.

Karrinjarla Muwajarri means ‘police ceasefire’. A police ceasefire would see an end to the discriminatory powers and laws introduced with the Northern Territory Intervention, and a restoration of community control.

The 2007 Northern Territory Intervention introduced various discriminatory and draconian controls over Aboriginal lands and communities. These harmful and often deadly impacts are still felt by the community today. More children are being forcibly removed from their families than ever before. Overrepresentation in prison continues to grow. And Aboriginal deaths in custody remain a horrific reality.

The Warlpiri are demanding that Territory Police are disarmed of their weapons in communities, that police funding is redirected to community controlled alternatives, and that self determination is respected to enable the Warlpiri to govern and authorise in their own communities. First Nations People in this country are tired of calling for justice, demanding change, and hoping that things will be different. But when our communities ask us to step up and fight for justice - we do it.

Please join us on June 18 for a day of action, in solidarity with the Warlpiri Nation – the community of Yuendumu – and call for karrinjarla muwajarri:

  • Attend a rally. There are rallies happening in capital cities across the country in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.
  • Post on social media. Spread the word using the Walpiri’s social media assets across your own channels.
  • Register your organisation’s endorsement of the campaign. If your organisation is able to endorse the campaign and statements of demands, please consider doing so – you can share a statement of support, or you can contact the campaign directly to list your endorsement.

Amnesty International Australia is proud to stand in solidarity with the Elders and community of Yuendumu. We support their calls for a police ceasefire in their communities, and for their community control to be restored. First Nations communities have suffered pain and loss for far too long. This 18 June, we will show up – and we’re asking you to please show up with us.

In solidarity,

Maggie Munn, Indigenous Rights Campaigner, Amnesty International Australia

Dear All,

12pm AEST today, Saturday, 18 June 2022 - NOT 1pm!!!

Protest at Sydney Town Hall

No police guns - end racist NT Intervention powers - Justice for Walker and all deaths in custody

https://www.facebook.com/events/587849159348705

I've just been kindly advised that today's protest is 12pm and not 1pm. Originally it had stated 1pm on the facebook event for today and therefore I've kept sending out that time without realising/noticing it had changed on the facebook event link. Hopefully some people would have looked at the facebook event link and noticed this change.

I'm really truly sorry for this oversight and hope that many of you who had planned to attend would still be able to attend an hour earlier. My apologies for any inconvenience this error may have caused you.

best regards,

Sabine
