4 friends Kalim (Angad Bedi), Gautam (Neil Bhoopalam), Maya (Kangana Ranaut) and Abhay (Randeep Hooda) delve into what seems to be their "first case" , having started the Ungli gang, which fights against corruption. Their job is to bug corrupt people and teach them moral lessons quite unconventionally. They target a corrupt minister and become the most wanted people in Mumbai, but also earn respect, affection, and admiration in the media and general public.

Meanwhile, ACP Ashok Kaale (Sanjay Dutt) meets his superior, DCP Shivraman (Shiv Kumar Subramaniam) who introduces him to Police Commissioner Arvind Kaul (Raza Murad) with the task of deciphering the Ungli gang. Later, Kaale travels to another police station where he meets an amusingly frustrated officer, Kaale's colleague and bomb-squad commandant Shishir Mishra (Shishir Sharma), who is disgusted with the "crime" his recruit Nikhil Abhyankar (Emraan Hashmi) has done. Eventually, it goes so: a college was attended to by the bomb squad when there was news that a bomb was planted there. Nikhil took advantage of the situation and met his girlfriend (Rachel White) with whom he shared a kiss, but soon they were caught by the dogs of the Bomb Squad. Later, it surfaced up that the call was made from Mishra's desk, and Nikhil did it. Kaale finds it funny at first and points out the clever act Nikhil made, but when the officer reprimands Nikhil and himself, Kaale visits Nikhil's mother (Reema Lagoo) where she tells him that Nikhil had the qualities of his father, Kaale's colleague Arvind, and that Nikhil was raised by Kaale like his own son. Nikhil, it is shown, attends a disco bar, where Kaale calls him up to discuss matters concerning the "Ungli" gang.

Nikhil begins searching for altruistic opportunities to earn the Ungli gang great fame, once by blowing up the roads in front of a minister's house and accusing politicians and PWD workers of torturing the people by lavishly spending money on renovation of roads directly linked to houses and offices of politicians and corporates alone, another instance by putting up a label of dishonesty on the auto-rickshaw drivers by accusing them of charging high rates and showing reluctance when asked to drive to places close by. Finding him adamant, Maya suggests that Nikhil too has wishes to join the gang, and on certain terms and conditions, the four friends admit Nikhil, and narrate the story behind the gang's formation.

Maya's brother Rajeev Singh aka Ricky (Arunoday Singh) was a great fitness freak and struck a rapport with the four friends quite a time. However, one day, while trying to prevent a scuffle between an old man (Avijit Dutt) and a bratty youngster Anshuman, Ricky tried to defend the old man, but Anshuman struck him hard, landing him straight into coma. The old man later decided to complain to the police, but was advised against it by the police itself, when a hunchback of Police Supremo B.R. Dayal (Mahesh Manjrekar), Anshuman's father, spoke so. The old man was firm, but when his granddaughter, while waiting at a bus stop, was threatened with an acid attack, the old man was forced to swerve from his stand to protect her. This plunged Maya into grief, but Abhay was angry at one of Maya's comments and this paved the way for the "Ungli" gang. Nikhil poses as a law student to illusion the four.

While preparing for a raid, Nikhil sprained his knee, but later called up Kaale when the four left. However, feeling remorseful, he later attacked Kaale to defend his new "friends", but when his identity was discovered, the four friends slammed him with Abhay hitting him hard, and Kaale further hitting him, but Nikhil later chides Kaale for believing the "Ungli" gang as a criminal force. However, when faced with a loss of duty, finding that DCP Shivraman is trying to bribe him into getting a posting of choice to save ends, Kaale agrees with Nikhil, and seeks out the gang to expose Dayal. Meanwhile, Abhay confesses to his co-worker, Tiesta Sen (Neha Dhupia) his love for her as well as his identity of the "Ungli" gang.

Exposing a dirty racquet of money makers in the widely distributed Mumbai police force with a simple chemical trick involving sulphur sprayed over printed notes that would leave a lasting black impressions on the officer's tongue via saliva, Kaale regains duty and is promoted to the post of Commissioner, getting Dayal and Anshuman arrested. Later, Kaale reassures the gang that the city won't need another as long as everything is under control.

Mid-day gave the film 3 stars out of 5, highlighting the direction and performances, and said the film would have been "wonderful" except for the dialogues, which it said were sometimes "downright idiotic".[4]

Five friends team up to battle police corruption in Hindi comedy-drama Ungli. Out now in Cineworld, it's the second film to be directed by Rensil D'Silva, the man behind critically acclaimed 2009 offering Kurbaan.

Veteran Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt plays fearsome Inspector Kaali, the man responsible for cracking down on our heroes. We caught up with him and
talked about how he got into shape for the role, and what it was like working with director Rensil D'Silva.

Movie review: 'Ungli' a listless and superficial thrillerDirector: Rensil D'SilvaCast: Sanjay Dutt, Emraan Hashmi, Randeep Hooda, Kangana Ranaut, Neha Dhupia, Angad Bedi, Neil Bhoopalam.

Writer-director Rensil D'Silva's 'Ungli' is a broad blend of elements from Rang De Basanti, a 2006 film that he co-scripted, and touches of the good old revenge drama. But the outcome of the amalgam is anything but salutary.

Ungli is about four friends -- Abhay (Randeep Hooda), Maya (Kangna Ranaut), Kaleem (Angad Bedi) and Gautam alias Goti (Neil Bhoopalam) -- and their brave attempt to clean the system of corruption in their unique vigilante style.

That makes them wear masks, roam the streets of Mumbai at night, kidnap corrupt officials in a van, video tape their acts of wrongdoing and send the tapes to news channels to expose the system and change it for the larger good.

Of the cast, only Randeep Hooda shows some guts and style in essaying the role of a crime reporter-turned-system-cleaner but his ungli (I mean effort) falls flat as they go about exposing corrupt pension officials, traffic police and the wheeler-dealers who broker police transfers for a fee.

The vigilantes go about exposing the Dayals -- Mahesh Manjrekar and his son Rajat Kaul -- without the latter doing any ungli to repulse the four friends. The scene just begins and ends in a blink-and-you-miss moment!

This was way 4 years back since Bhavesh Joshi. To be precise, Ungli is a partially flawed version of Insaaf in the name of Ungli gang. Loved the symbol of Ungli Gang btw! Emraan, Sanjay baba, Kangana Ranaut, and Randeep Hooda are present here, but they never tried to pull off their characters. The mediocre acting had seriously wrecked the film?.

But it's still a fun film with an interesting story and concept. It's the first time I've ever seen anything with Emraan and I can say he's got charisma. Definitely going to dig more into his works in the future.

In an interview with MensXP, Emraan Hashmi admitted that he had done a few films 'kitchen chalane ke liye'. He also quipped that his 2007 film Good Boy Bad Boy was the type of film that could have shut his 'kitchen' down entirely.

In an interview with Daily Bhaskar, Ajay Devgn admitted that he regretted doing the 2011 film Rascals and called it 'the only vulgar film' he has ever done. He also said he would never do a film like that.

Bollywood has witnessed many a theme (read 'genre') of films ever since its inception. Even though there have been many repeated themes that we get to see almost every week, only a few films remain fresh in our memories. There have been many elements that form the crux of any film. One such element is that of corruption which has 'evolved' over the years. This week's release UNGLI falls into this category, which mirrors the 'system of corruption' that is prevalent in today's time. Director Rensil D'Silva's UNGLI is an attempt to mirror the corrupt system which prevails in the society today. At a time when candle marches, protest and agitation are soon becoming passe', Rensil tries to showcase that 'ungli' is the new form of rebellion where you turn the tables in the system. Does it succeed in showing 'the middle finger' to the prevalent corruption? And if yes, how much does it succeed at it? Let's' analyze.

With the baseline as 'The system is so corrupt that you can only ridicule it', the film UNGLI starts off on a high. The film opens with an old man and his young daughter waiting at the Pension Office and being bullied by the 'babus' working in the office. The old man gets a stroke and lands up in a hospital where his poor daughter narrates her dilemma to the doctor, which is overheard by Maya (Kangna Ranaut), who is works in the same hospital. She informs her friends Abhay (Randeep Hooda), Goti (Neil Bhoopalam) and Kaleem (Angad Bedi) that they got their 'first case'. The team, then, covers their faces in masks and kidnap the 'babus' at night. As a part of their plan, they strap the 'babus' with 'time bombs' and make them run in an empty stadium. Not just that, they also inform the cops and media about the same. In no time, their antics are all over the media channels and they become famous as the 'UNGLI' gang. Slowly the gang starts expanding their operations and putting up the videos of punishing the corrupt on the internet and win the hearts of the masses. The cops, however, are not happy about this and the Police Commissioner (Raza Murad) gives the case to anhonest police officer Ashok Kale (Sanjay Dutt) to solve. But, when Kale fails to catch the gang, he realizes that he will need to use someone who thinks like them to work against them. That's when he decides to put a police officer Nikhil (Emraan Hashmi) on job. Emraan, who happens to be the son of a late cop and a close friend of Kale, is not interested in working with the police and hates the system and it's functioning. He is however notorious in his ways of operating and hence Kale hands him the responsibility of catching the UNGLI gang. Nikhil takes up the job and does his own tricks in punishing the corrupt and takes credit for it pretending to be an UNGLI gang member. The sudden entry of Nikhil wakes up and shakes up the original gang. With a few hints that Nikhil throws at them through the 'trademarked' video messages, the gang tracks him down and eventually he joins them. However, Nikhil soon realizes that the gang is not wrong in their approach towards cleaning up the society. But, due to a certain situation and circumstances, he gets torn between his duty (as a police officer) and his friendship with the UNGLI gang members. Kale, on the other hand, too waits to seek answers from Nikhil as the pressure keeps building on him to catch the notorious gang. Amidst all of this, a situation gets cropped up where all these characters are faced with a situation where they have to either accept the corrupt society for what is it or else fight back by risking their own lives.

Whether Nikhil will for go his duty as a police office and betray the trust of the UNGLI gang by having them arrested, will Kale manage to get his hands on these gang members, will the gang manage to achieve what it have set out to do... is what which forms the rest of the story.

UNGLI happens to Rensil D'Silva's second film as a director (the first being Saif Ali Khan- Kareena Kapoor starrer KURBAAN). Rensil, who also doubles up as the film's story and screenplay writer, seems to have let off all his vents against the system in one breath. One can understand the intentions behind him making the film, but there are moments that could have been handled better. The problem with this film is that it lacks certain level of freshness. Even though the subject chosen is an old one, the treatment could have been different. Even though the film has been totally shot at real locations in Mumbai, certain situations could've been made to look more convincing. The scene that the audiences will be able to relate to the most is of the rickshaw guy refusing to travel a short distance. While the film establishes itself and its characters well within the first fifteen minutes, it loses the grip as it progresses. The first half of the film is effective and crisp, unlike the film's second half, which is stretched, thus, making the film bereft of entertainment value. The end climax scene will be difficult for certain audiences to digest.

As far as the performances are concerned, one can't finger point at any one actor by calling him the captain of the ship. Rather, this is one film, wherein everyone contributes their bit effectively. It is really nice to see the comeback (by default) of Sanjay Dutt, who handles every shot and frame effectively with his ever-so-effective trademark performance. Emraan Hashmi, on the other hand, spares no efforts to match his performance with that of Sanjay Dutt. It is however Randeep Hooda who springs up a pleasant surprise in this film! As always, he exhibits a strong screen presence and is as usual, a delight to watch. Neil Bhoopalam and Angad Bedi perform well in their parts. Kangna Ranaut has done well in her role as part of the 'ungli' gang member. Neha Dhupia, on the other hand, seems to have got a good part to perform on the big screen after a long time in this film where she plays a TV reporter. Shraddha Kapoor sizzles and excels in her first everitem number ('Dance Basanti'). The other actors Mahesh Manjrekar, Shiv Subramaniyam, Raza Murad, Reema Lagoo and others do their bit in carrying the story forward.

While the background music (John Stewart) of the film is brilliant, the film's music (Salim-Sulaiman, Sachin-Jigar, Gulraj Singh) is not bad. Songs like 'Ungli Theme' and 'Dance Basanti' are peppy while 'Pakeezah' is melodious. The film's editing is very crisp, so much so that the film's run time is only 114 minutes. Dialogues by Milap Zaveri are very real and in today's lingo. The entire film is shot in Mumbai and the DoP has done a decent job of portraying the city.

All in all, if you want to watch a film about rebelling against the corrupt system then UNGLI is a decent watch for this weekend.
