I've made a small change to the layout of the website
(
www.stopjunkmail.org.uk)… in the top right corner there are now links
to the contact page, about page, sitemap and this newsgroup.
In total, there are now nine links in the header area. Not all
sections / pages are linked but I reckon this is fine. Adding another
handful of links to the navigation wouldn't really improve anything.
Here are the pages that are currently not linked:
- The manifesto (
www.stopjunkmail.org.uk/manifesto/)
The manifesto isn't really written for the general public. It's
intended for the die-hards and to underpin the campaign. Actively
directing people to it would be off-putting.
- Frequently Asked Questions (
www.stopjunkmail.org.uk/faq/)
This should maybe be added to the navigation in the top right corner?
- Junk mail art (
www.stopjunkmail.org.uk/art/)
I much like this section but the content is a bit dated. Could be
linked from the home page when there's new junk mail art.
- Links pages (
www.stopjunkmail.org.uk/links/)
I don't really see what this page adds to the website. I'm keeping it
because it could be extended to become a 'green guide' with links to
other organisations. At the moment this isn't a priority.
- Features (
www.stopjunkmail.org.uk/features/)
There some useful content here but it needs to be updated.
- Videos (
www.stopjunkmail.org.uk/videos/)
This page exists for historic reasons only. I think the videos are
nice but not particularly suitable for the campaign (they probably
were at the time they were made but things change…)
The main issue with the navigation is the fixed navigation bar at the
bottom of the browser window. It's useful because it puts a Google
custom search box on every page, and in for instance the Guide
(
www.stopjunkmail.org.uk/guide) it can function as contextual
navigation (i.e. it can show links to the previous and next page in
the guide). However, on most pages the contextual navigation is now
redundant. There's no point in having links to 'About' and 'Sitemap'
on the home page, for instance - these links are now in the header.
Removing the bar would also remove the Google search box. There's
actually a good argument in favour of this: it might make the labels
at the bottom of pages more prominent. A search box could still be
displayed on some pages (i.e. it might be useful on the home, sitemap,
and labels page).
Alternatively, the links could be replaced with a footer text
('website by Beepmode' / 'carbon neutral website' / etc.). Apart from
advertising my web design business and green credentials I'm not
should what such information would actually add to the site (it's an
advertising free zone!).
In short, the question is: to delete, or not to delete the fixed
navigation bar.
