Are you going to celebrate a birthday in Italy? In Italy, birthdays usually mean cake and presents, but some of the details differ quite a bit from the United States. The main one being: Italian birthdays are paid for by the celebrant. Your day, you foot the bill!

Turning 18 is a big deal: If you are going to throw one huge birthday party, it will probably be when you turn 18. This is the pivotal Italian birthday, rather than 21 years old like in the United States.

However, it is a bit more common to wish someone TANTI AUGURI! Auguri is best wishes or congratulations, so it can be used under different happy circumstances. It remains the most popular way to wish someone a happy birthday in Italian!

There is nothing quite like a celebration in Italy. I have a vivid memory from when I lived in Italy 27 years ago. My friends and I were out in the country and happened upon an Italian wedding taking place. It seemed like the entire town was there and the party went on for hours. There was tons of food, wine and laughter. I remember thinking how much fun it would be part of an Italian celebration and I finally got the chance in a belated birthday celebration Italian style, the highlight of my week and the Please The Palate pick of the week.

Like most people, I celebrated a significant birthday during lockdown. While I was able to have a small celebration with my family, the dreams I had to take a trip could not be realized. But, a few months ago, my dear friend Samantha of 27 years in Italy called me up and said she was throwing a lunch to celebrate her significant birthday with another friend of hers, and she said I had to come and celebrate mine with her. How could I say no. I was itching to travel. I am fully vaccinated and take all precautions. I booked my flight for my first international trip in two years.

Parties are always fun. But American parties are typically a few hours. If you are invited to a birthday lunch, it will probably take up 3 or 4 hours of your day. But, not a birthday lunch in Italy! A birthday lunch in Italy starts with aperitivi and then you sit down for a lunch filled with good food and wine. But when lunch is over, the party does not end. At least ours did not.

Originally we were planning on throwing a simple birthday party complete with balloons and streamers. We wanted to keep preparations to a minimum so decided on an easy yet delicious menu of pizza and cupcakes.

Ender's first birthday is the day before Thanksgiving, so we thought we'd throw him a party a little early and avoid the holiday craziness in everyone's schedules. We joke that we didn't have any friends in Charlotte until we got a dog, and even though it sounds ridiculous, it's actually true--so it was fitting that our Charlotte best friends and their pups all came over for an afternoon of treats and celebration.

It was so funny and cute and everything worked out exactly the way I hoped it would. I'm about to share a ton of photos with you, so before I get into that I thought I'd list the party details, because I'm still giggling about all of them:

I started preparing for my dinner party as soon as I got home from Boston last weekend, pouring over my cookbook and travel photos to choose the menu! I spent the whole day on Friday cooking and cleaning for the party. Most of Friday afternoon was spent preparing the homemade cannoli shells (keep reading for the recipe!).

I was up bright and early on Saturday morning to get started on the fresh pasta (using a shiny new Imperia pasta machine given to me by my hubby for my birthday). Around lunchtime, my mom joined me in the kitchen, playing sous chef and helping me pull the whole thing off. She also provided the mold for the fresh ravioli!

I have never been to Boston, but I really want to go. Happy Birthday and what a party! Oh my goodness all of that food looks amazing! I hope someone did the dishes for you, that is a lot of work for your own b-day! It looks so fun though! I am sure the party was amazing!

Happy Birthday to you! Whas a great dinner and celebration. Everything looks fabulious! I was going to do a BD party too but my BD was clear back on the 8th. Decided to drop the BD from title. LOL. So you were wating Cannolli while I was eating molten chocolate cake. :)

Nothing makes you feel young on your birthday like a evening spent among very old things. During a trip to Italy one fall, Fathom founders Pavia Rosati and Jeralyn Gerba explored a centuries-old retreat in the Apennine Mountains and stayed to celebrate.

An old encampment for religious recluses wasn't what I originally had in mind for my birthday blowout. Then again, I was living in a medieval Italian village at the time, and party options varied slightly from those at home in New York. A friend in Spoleto told us about a beautiful hidden retreat known only to locals; the next morning we set out on a hike to find it.

Learning the back story felt like big present, but we came up with a great excuse to go back: my birthday dinner. At twilight, we made the trek through the woods, husbands in tow, and it was dark by the time we reached the estate. There was a fire in a hearth on the terrace, which we practically had to ourselves.

It's Buki's birthday and she has invited her friends to celebrate on one of the hills in Rome. They're all dressed in togas, like ancient Romans, and after the birthday greetings Buki finds out what her presents are. They also beat down the Pignatta, which is full of sweets and trinkets. Then it's time to eat, and bring on the birthday cake. Spoken in Italian with Italian graphics. Narration in English.

Turning 40 was either an excuse to hole up at home nursing my new set of eye wrinkles, or an opportunity to share something fabulous in Italy with the friends I have scattered across California, New York and Europe. After the sting of being slapped with four full decades had cooled, I decided to celebrate. I began to plot my party with as much exactitude as my wedding in Portofino seven years prior.

The answer involved concocting an ambitious affair that would be tantalizing as a mini-vacation and convenient enough to work around the schedules of the travelling guests. My birthday party took place over three days in Rome in May, a dead month in the fashion world but a glorious time for Titian blue skies and Apollo-strength sun.

We were thrilled when our amazing client Susie asked us back to plan a second event! This time for her kids joint birthday party. With 60+ kids and 20 adults in attendance, no detail was spared. And while the incredible food, cake and decorations won over the many guests, it was the DJ who stole the show! Joey from Electric Entertainment kept the energy high throughout the event, keeping the kids and their parents dancing, laughing and enjoying games like Musical Chairs and The Limbo.

We have made quite a name for ourselves when it comes time for a birthday celebration. Come in on your birthday and get the Spaghetti Classica with marinara or meat sauce or if you choose take $14.50 off any menu choice, this includes our famous salad, garlic rolls and a birthday dessert. (please show I.D).

Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Andrea Bocelli, the list goes on. Italian singers and songwriters have made a huge impact on music all over the world. Set the mood for your party with The Perfect Italian Dinner, a playlist from Spotify. After dinner, work off some of those carbs with a groovy Italo Dance playlist!

This intimate and chic event space in Morrow, Georgia has their own 360 photo booth and backdrops that you can use. Bring along some Italy-themed photo booth props like the ones we found on Etsy! This location would be perfect for making your Italian-themed party ideas come true.

When I lived in the US and well before I had a child, I was very judgmental of the excesses I saw parents heap on their children, especially when it came to birthday parties. Bounce house parties, bowling alley parties, parties at gymnastic centres. Elaborate cakes, helium balloons, gift bags for every child in attendance. Too much. And every year had to somehow be different from and outdo the last.

So, my mother-in-law and I set to menu planning for our little party. Despite my efforts to keep it simple, our entirely homemade menu included: mini-pizzas, six or eight types of savoury canapés, chips, popcorn, breadsticks, five types of mini-sandwiches, two crostatas (one with fruit, one with Nutella), two types of cookies (my contribution to the food-fest), cream-filled beignets, a filled orange cake, a Bavarian-cream cake with blackberries, and the pièce de résistance, cream and chocolate filled cake with white-chocolate icing in the form of a butterfly. My daughter said she wanted a butterfly cake and damn it, my mother- and sister-in-law made sure she got a butterfly cake.

We've been to [Poughkeepsie] location a few times now and it's always fantastic! Great food and wonderful service. I just recently hosted my daughters birthday party here. I called a few different restaurants and found Savona's Poughkeepsie to be the most inviting. From my first call with Katherine, a hostess, it was clear this is where the party should be held. Also, manager Erin, was excellent in her communication with me about the party. The day of the party we were lucky enough to have our waitress be Emma! Can't say enough about her service that day. Many in our party also commented how wonderful the service was. We will continue to return to Savonas in Poughkeepsie! Bravo!
