Beyond the general question of overall social media use, the survey also covers use of individual sites and apps. YouTube and Facebook continue to dominate the online landscape, with 81% and 69%, respectively, reporting ever using these sites. And YouTube and Reddit were the only two platforms measured that saw statistically significant growth since 2019, when the Center last polled on this topic via a phone survey.
In a pattern consistent with past Center studies on social media use, there are some stark age differences. Some 84% of adults ages 18 to 29 say they ever use any social media sites, which is similar to the share of those ages 30 to 49 who say this (81%). By comparison, a somewhat smaller share of those ages 50 to 64 (73%) say they use social media sites, while fewer than half of those 65 and older (45%) report doing this.
The social media graduate certificate is a tremendous opportunity for working professionals to learn skills and gain insight to assist in their careers. The professional certificate includes four courses that can be completed in two semesters.
The purpose of this course is to teach students a new skill set in digital storytelling through ideas, production, and analysis. To create impactful stories, the students will be introduced to a new understanding and thought process of how digital stories differ from those in print, radio, and television. The students will learn about the changing roles of storytellers in news, promotion, public relations, and marketing while discussing and analyzing media consumption habits that encourage a seamless transition from active audience member to creator. The students will develop skills to produce creative online stories that will reverberate with the widest audience possible and learn video storytelling techniques with Adobe Audition and Adobe Premiere Pro.
This course focuses on social media best practices for content, frequency, visuals, and the mechanics behind each practice. Students will learn how social media influences public relations, marketing, customer services, and other aspects of business communications. The course explores the differences between the major social media channels, their evolution, and the current and future status of social media for business.

All large-scale, multi-user communities and online social networks that rely on users to contribute content or build services share one property: most users don't participate very much. Often, they simply lurk in the background.
Before the web, researchers documented participation inequality in media such as Usenet newsgroups, CompuServe bulletin boards, Internet mailing lists, and internal discussion boards in big companies. A study of more than 2 million messages on Usenet found that 27% of the postings were from people who posted only a single message. Conversely, the most active 3% of posters contributed 25% of the messages.

There are a variety of dangers lurking online that affect minors in a number of different ways. The Internet has expanded the way that young people communicate and interact with their peers. Young people use popular social media sites to stay in touch with their friends and to meet new people. Even on websites geared towards children and young adults, there are often adult online predators who look to interact with children. In the most serious cases, this can lead to real life encounters.
There are an estimated 500,000 online predators active each day. Children between the ages of 12 and 15 are especially susceptible to be groomed or manipulated by adults they meet online. According to the F.B.I., over 50 percent of the victims of online sexual exploitation are between the ages of 12 and 15. An estimated 89 percent of sexual advances directed at children occur in Internet chatrooms or through instant messaging. In over a quarter of all reported exploitation incidents, the online predator will ask a child for sexually explicit photos of themselves. Four percent of children receive aggressive solicitations from adults online, including attempts to contact the children in person or over the phone. In addition, 58 percent of parents report being concerned about the threats that strangers pose online. Two out of ten children between the ages of 8 and 11 are aware of the issue and are concerned that strangers may find out information about them. And while using social media, forty percent of children remove privacy settings in order to attract more friends or followers.
Adult predators looking to groom children online often visit social media websites that are popular with young people and will pretend to be their age. The adult may try to secure their trust with fake profile pictures, by pretending to share similar interests, by offering gifts to the child or by complimenting the child.
While adults who groom children online are often strangers, this is not always the case. In many circumstances, the child may have met a groomer through family or other connections and the adult builds a relationship with the child online. The child may not even realize that he or she is being groomed and may consider the groomer to be a boyfriend or girlfriend.
Online grooming may be difficult to detect because it often occurs while a child is home and simply using the computer. Groomers often order children not to talk about their conduct. However, there may be signs that a child is being groomed by an online predator, including spending an increasing amount of time online, becoming secretive about their online conduct, switching screens or closing tabs or windows whenever a parent is close, using sexual language they would not be expected to know and becoming emotionally volatile.
The development of Internet communication and social media has expanded the traditional notion of identity. Now, people have online identities in addition to real life identities. It can be hard to manage the relationship between online and real life identities because a) materials that are posted online may exist forever; b) they can shape people's interpersonal perception towards you in the real world; and c) employers tend to use online platforms to verify and validate the identity of individuals. Hence, it is important to be aware of effective ways to manage your online identities.

Even if a social media app or website never asks you for data, you should assume it is still collecting it. Routinely (every month or so) check your privacy settings and ensure everything fits within your comfort level.
Multi-factor authentication (MFA), sometimes called two-factor authentication or two-step verification, requires anyone logging into an account to prove their identity multiple ways. Typically, you will enter your username, password, and then prove your identity some other way, like with a fingerprint or by responding to a text message. Why go through all this trouble? Because MFA makes it extremely hard for hackers to access your online accounts, even if they know your password.
