I made a sketch of a diverter that might help redirect the oil and gas
once a blowout has begun, and the rig is on fire. See file
diverter.png. Suggestions are welcome.

The design requirements are:
1) Installation must be done by divers, while the fire is raging at
the surface.
2) Construction must take less than 48 hours, using readily available
parts and materials.
3) The end of the riser may be torn and deformed, and have a section
of drill pipe sticking out.

Nice. I can hardly wait for the testing. I'll get my scuba gear and
some shaped charges.

You might want to flare (as in spread) the end of that pipe, so it
won't snag when we are trying to winch it down onto the jagged end of
the riser.

Also, how about making this a permanent part of any drilling setup,
not requiring installation *after* a blowout. The top section of the
riser, just under the water could have two pipes off to the side.
Make those caps into rupture disks, add a pipe ram just under the
drilling platform, and you might have a good system to back up the
normal BOP.

I've modified the drawing as suggested. Send me a picture of you in
scuba gear, and I'll use it instead of that silly clip art.

I would like to put everything together in a drawing like the billion
$ containment system, but I don't know how to draw the cross-section
of the ocean. Maybe one of our Sketchup pros can help.
