When it comes to economic wealth and wellbeing, Canada usually appears
in group A, along with other countries belonging to the OECD.
Unfortunately, when it comes to protecting citizens against potential
nuclear accidents Canada falls far below the standards of other
Developed nations.

All of the countries in Group A are signatories to the 2004 Amending
Protocol to the Paris Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear
Damage. It sets a minimum liability limit for nuclear power plant
operators at €700 Million (about $1.1 Billion canadian). It also
provides for €500 Million in compensation from state funds and €300
Million pooled by all signatories providing total coverage of €1500
Million (about $2.4 Billion canadian).

Some countries have moved even further - Germany, Finland, Japan and
soon Sweden all impose unlimited liability on their nuclear operators.

In contrast, the Canadian government is planning to limit the
liability for nuclear plants to just $650 million. That means that in
the event of even a moderate accident, there will not be nearly enough
money to cover the damages. Either victims will lose out, or the
Canadian taxpayer will be asked to foot the bill.

Isn't it time that the Nuclear Industry starting paying for itself ?
