Here's an important date for your diaries! Saturday 21st February 2009
The time is almost (sort of) upon us for Japan's largest festival of
drunken nakedness for religious reasons and holy sticks.
Traditionally, this is one of Stonewall's biggest events for reasons
that are too obvious to even need implying. Stonewall also holds a
dinner before the main event.
For those who are unaware, the Hadaka Matsuri or Naked Man Festival is
held in Saidaiji, Okayama every February. There are other naked
festivals in Japan, but Okayama's is the biggest and most popular,
with approximately 12000 men taking part and many more watching. JETs
and other foreigners come from all over Japan to enjoy a night of
either mostly naked fighting over holy sticks (men) or laughing
heartily at the boys (ladies and those men not wanting to get nekkid
in February), followed by even more alcohol and overnight fun back in
the delightful city of Okayama - you won't get back from the festival
till waaay past last train.
Handily, you don't have to plan any of this yourself - OkaJET takes
you to the festival, gets you back and organises all the crazies who
want to actually run round in the cold. They will also be on hand to
help you find the closest alcohol/karaoke/location to vomit in the
city on your return. If you ask veerrry nicely, they'll even help you
find somewhere to stay. And, of course, by they, I am referring to
myself and Jon, your friendly coordinators, in the 3rd person, seeing
as we are like, totally ultra-genki super JETs *snort* and are also on
the OkaJET committee. If you're in two minds about whether it's worth
it - many come back more than once and OkaJET has received the Best
Interprefectural Event award from National AJET for like the last
bazillion years.
All you have to do is sign up and get to Okayama. Details are not yet
available - prices, times and such - but should you have any questions
or to register your interest, please don't hesitate to send a mail to
nakedman2009@ gmail.com - now is the time to be thinking if you want
to come, given that many people are away over the vacation period.
