Greetings fellow Heroes of Stonereach,

Let me start off with how I enjoyed the expidition we conducted
wednesday night. It was good to start to get to know everyone and to
see our capabilities. We vanquished a small horde of goblins to
include a goblin shamen, took a goblin prisoner and discovered that
the water supply is contaminated. However, I think that we can do
better with a little for-planning before we set out from the towns'
gates.

We know that the goblins in these parts like to use traps and that
they do have either divine or arcane spell ability within their
ranks. So before we go charging in to attack, it would be wise of us
to perhaps "recon" or "scout" the area first. We have several capable
adventurers here that can handle that I believe. I propose that
shortly after we leave the town gates that we send one or two of the
scouts ahead of the main group about forty or fifty feet. Their job
would be to simply provide an early warning of a goblin camp for
example, determine how many goblins are there and to get a description
of the terrain and any other hazzards, and report back to the main
group so we can all make a plan of attack.

Remeber that we are a team and the good people of Stonereach are
depending on us for their growth and survival in these chaotic and
harsh times. The floor is now open for everyones comments, input and
ideas, thank you.

Scouting is usually always a good idea, except if you think this would
prevent the tripping of traps that occurred last night.

Having said that, as of right now I am a Halfling rogue:
Hide: +11
Listen: +8
Move Silently: +10
Spot: +6

Should be pretty good at it.

If the "scouty people" want to be ahead 40 to 50 feet or whatever, and
report back to the main party or attack with missiles first or
whatever, I've got no problems with that. ^_^

There's also the option of course of ensuring that every party member
has a decent ranged weapon so that 8 or more shots are fired at
goblins from a reasonably safe distance everytime.

Well, my hide and MS are nothing like yours, only +5/+5, but I will
scout ahead if need be. And yes, everyone needs to have some kind of
ranged weapon... a bow, crossbow, or sling would suffice.

I agree about the ranged weapon situation. I myself don't have one as
of yet. I would prefer to have a light crossbow but right now I can
not afford one.

A further note on the scout thing. My base speed in medium armor is
20 feet, so if the scouts get into trouble (i.e. an ambush) at 40 feet
in front I could make a charge attack and be with them in 1 round as
well as anyone else who has a base speed of 20 feet (or more). This
way the scouts would not be in too much danger or be all alone for too
long. But the further out they get from the main group the longer
they would have to wait for back-up.

I too can scout well. I agree with the above idea.

If I am to assume the main GM of this game, everyone can assume I will
use vantage points to my advantage. I have no problems killing off
PCs, since re-rolling is a fairly simple process. I hope I
demonstrated that yesterday by nearly taking out 3 PCs with traps. I
hope my descriptions made the game more interesting than lengthy (most
of the length was due to a storm cutting out my connectivity) and I
will also start to impose limitations on number of adventurers. I do
have a fiance that "needs" me often and does not like when I spend too
much attention on the computer, however, as to you the players, if you
wish for me to GM, I will make every effort to have at least 1 session
during the week, and will make every effort to run 1 game every other
weekend.

If you wish to use scouts, I think that is a great setup, however,
they will need to have tracking and survival skills to find paths and
make it through the terrain to your destinations. Remember, there are
pros and cons to using scouts and I will take advantage of the cons.

I would offer myself up, but It maybe better if I was in the group
behind them. I've proven my capabilites, game wise, in archary.
However I do plan on upgrading my bow, and gaining a pet. So I maybe
part of the scout party, but more or less back up.

O yes, and I have tracking and survival as well, forgot to mention
that. I'm not a super-sneaky (read +5hide/+5MS), but I can get around
decently, in the woods at least.

Akaris,

Real life always has precedence over the internet.  The problem with a project of this undertaking is that to perform it like the Original West Marches Campaign requires the DM to have a lot of free time.  That may not be the case with you, and you should not feel guilty about it.

You should just be honest about when you're available, and sometimes real life issues come to the forefront, and you may have to cancel a game or two, that's just life.

The combat descriptions did help, certainly, and yes by all means, let the rolls land where they do.  No, let's not do E6.  I do advocate voice chat to create a more immersive rp experience, but that may be hard to do given the current situation.

And yes you are head DM now.

I do have to agree with Bill on the E6 thing. Let's stick to D&D.
Level 6+ is a long ways away anyways.

I understand about the real life thing. It definately takes
precedence. I just happen to have a lot of free time now, so that is
why I found this group and saw the setup was very compelling. Just DM
when you can, and no one will care if you have to cancel a game or
two, just like Bill says.

As far as killing PCs go, do it. It is boring when PCs feel like they
can't die.

Alright the E6 plan will be dropped, but I will get everyone to level
3 and then the game will turn in to a grind. It will not be like D&D
Online where you have to go through 4 damn ranks to get to level 4 and
it takes an entire zone worth of quests (this game feels a lot like
the original WoW going from 59 to 60 the very first time), but there
will be a significant decrease in leveling speed. Part of this is
because I want to create a town that is dependent on the group and the
group grows at the same pace as the town. No sense having characters
level 10 with a city that can barely provide for a level 1 party. I
will be doing my best to create all of the major city structures,
including markets, the magicians hall, the two main spiritual centers,
blacksmiths, mayor's chambers, stables and the rest of the what-nots.
Hopefully I will have them posted by Sunday night/Monday morning so
check the wiki's "rescent changes" page.
